Google has beaten its rivals to a critical milestone, with its Gemini and Gemini in Workspace the first AI assistants to “achieve FedRAMP High authorization.”
The Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) “provides a standardized approach to the security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring of cloud products and services.” The program is designed to help the government use cloud products in a safe and secure manner, especially given the sensitive information at stake.
In a blog post, Google says its Gemini products are the first to achieve the coveted authorization, giving agencies the ability “to confidently deploy Gemini’s advanced AI capabilities today, within the stringent FedRAMP High security framework and without the need for expensive AI add-ons and complex configurations.”
In particular, the authorization allows Google to offer:
- Gemini in Google Docs, Drive, Gmail, Meet, Sheets, and Slides: Empower teams to do their best work faster and more efficiently with AI embedded in the tools they use every day. Gemini streamlines team communications by helping users summarize, draft, and find information in their emails, chats, and files. It can be a thought partner and source of inspiration, helping teams create professional documents, slides, and spreadsheets. Gemini can even improve team meetings by taking notes, enhancing audio and video, and catching people up on the conversation if they join late.
- Gemini app: Help teams kickstart learning, brainstorming, and planning with the Gemini app on their laptop or mobile device. The Gemini app can help teams tackle complex projects including coding, research, and data analysis and lets them build Gems (customized versions of Gemini that help teams tackle repetitive tasks or get deep expertise in new areas).
Google credits its quick FedRAMP High authorization to the inherent design Workspace and other Google cloud products.
We were able to achieve FedRAMP High authorization for Gemini on an accelerated basis because we designed Workspace with a structurally different, more secure and innovative architecture. Unlike other providers that offer dedicated “Gov Clouds”, Workspace delivers a secure and reliable cloud infrastructure for all customers, ensuring that government agencies receive the same benefits, capacity, and features at the same pace as commercial customers while supporting compliance requirements. The FedRAMP authorization adds to a comprehensive set of existing safety, privacy, and security certifications for Gemini, including SOC 1/2/3, ISO 27001/17/18, and ISO 42001 – the world’s first international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems. It certifies that Gemini has been developed, deployed, and maintained responsibly with appropriate ethical considerations, data governance, and transparency.
The FedRAMP High authorization illustrates our commitment to ensuring that the sensitive data of government agencies is rigorously protected, allowing them to leverage AI to enhance operational efficiency, improve workflows, streamline citizen service delivery, and accelerate innovation, all while adhering to stringent federal security requirements.
The authorization is a big win for Google, and demonstrates the company’s ability to come from behind in the AI race and challenge the leading companies in the field.
