Biden: ‘Tech Companies Have a Responsibility’ to Make AI Safe
President Joe Biden has weighed in on artificial intelligence developments, putting the responsibility on companies to keep people safe.
As the controversy surrounding AI development continues to mount, President Biden has weighed in, saying companies have a responsibility to keep users safe.
“Tech companies have a responsibility, in my view, to make sure their products are safe before making them public,” he said at the start a President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) meeting, via Reuters. When asked if AI was dangerous, he said, “It remains to be seen. It could be.”
Biden then brought up the precedent social media set and the dangers it posed when not properly regulated.
“Absent safeguards, we see the impact on the mental health and self-images and feelings and hopelessness, especially among young people,” Biden said.
The administration already released an AI Bill of Rights blueprint outlining responsible AI development last October. Despite that effort, there remain concerns about the rate at which AI is progressing.
A large number of tech executives, scientists, and other individuals signed an open letter asking companies to pause large-scale AI development to allow time for experts to develop safeguards and guidelines for the responsible use of AI.
