2020 iPhone May Be First Smartphone With 5nm Chip

First reported on by DigiTimes, Apple chip maker TSMC is ramping up to begin production of the A-14 chip for the 2020 iPhones.

According to DigiTimes, Chinese-language site Commercial Times reports that TSMC will continue to be Apple’s sole supplier of the A-series chips. The A-14 will also move to a 5nmchip, instead of the 7nm chips currently in use.

A 5nm chip will offer superior speed and energy consumption to its predecessor. A smaller chip has transistors that are closer together, giving it the ability to process instructions faster.

As DigitalTrends comments, “among the benefits predicted for the new 5nm chip is better performance accompanied by 5G and artificial intelligence integration. It has been widely speculated that Apple’s 2020 iPhone models will be 5G compatible.”

Apple’s A-series chips have continued to give it a significant performance advantage over Android devices, even flagship models. If the iPhone is the first device to ship with a 5nm chip, Apple’s lead will only grow.
