Microsoft Developing Custom Chips to Compete With Apple Silicon

Microsoft is developing a competitor to Apple’s M-Series chip in an effort to challenge Apple’s industry-leading design.

Apple’s M-Series chips revolutionized the laptop market. With their Arm-based roots, the chips provided a combination of power and efficiency not found in the x86 market. Other companies have tried to roll out Arm-based PCs, but none of them have been able to effectively compete with Apple’s custom silicon.

Microsoft wants to level the playing field, with Windows Latest reporting on job openings that suggest Microsoft is working on its own custom silicon in conjunction with various partners and its own “Microsoft Silicon team.”

According to the outlet, the company “is seeking a Principle System on Chip (SoC) Silicon Architect” with experience developing “high-performance SoC architecture.” The job description says the individual will work with Microsoft’s customers and partners.

“The candidate will be responsible for building complex, state-of-the-art SOCs using leading silicon technology nodes and will collaborate closely with internal customers and partners,” the job listing reads.

The outlet goes on to point out that Windows 12 is expected to be optimized for the Arm architecture, a move that could help it become an AI powerhouse.
