Google Software Returning to Honor Phones
Honor has announced that Google’s apps and services will be available on its new phones, starting with the Honor 50 and Honor 50 Pro.
Honor was a brand of smartphones owned and operated by Huawei. As part of the crackdown on Chinese firms, the US forced Google to pull Huawei’s Android license, leaving the firm to rely on the open source version of the OS, without the additional software and services Google provides.
As Huawei’s fortunes deteriorated, the company was eventually forced to sell off Honor, opening the way for a return of Google’s apps to the platform. According to The Verge, Google’s apps and services will be available starting with the new Honor 50 line of devices.
“Honor devices will therefore have the option to have Google Mobile Services (“GMS”) preinstalled on compatible devices, in accordance with Google’s licensing and governance models.”
“Consumers will be able to experience Honor smartphones and tablets equipped with GMS,” the company said.
The phones will be available for preorder June 25 in China, although the company plans to sell them in France, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia and the UK in time.
