FTC Unanimously Embraces Right to Repair

FTC Unanimously Embraces Right to Repair

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has “unanimously voted to ramp up law enforcement against repair restrictions.”

Right to repair has become a major issue for consumers, consumer advocacy groups and regulators alike. While it was once fairly easy to do basic repairs and upgrades to devices — such as replacing a cellphone battery or upgrading laptop memory — many manufactures have made it all but impossible in recent times.

Some jurisdictions have already begun to roll out their own right to repair laws, and the movement has been gaining support. President Biden recently directed the FTC to draft right to repair rules, and the agency has unanimously adopted a policy statement aimed at enforcing those rights.

“These types of restrictions can significantly raise costs for consumers, stifle innovation, close off business opportunity for independent repair shops, create unnecessary electronic waste, delay timely repairs, and undermine resiliency,” FTC Chair Lina Khan said during an open Commission meeting. “The FTC has a range of tools it can use to root out unlawful repair restrictions, and today’s policy statement would commit us to move forward on this issue with new vigor.”

The FTC’s vote is yet another ominous sign for Big Tech, signaling increased legislation and regulation that will have far-reaching impacts on all aspects of the industry.

SpaceX Owns Bitcoin and Ethereum Jumps on News Musk Owns Some

There were a number of revelations at The B Word conference, including that SpaceX owns Bitcoin and Elon Musk owns Ethereum.

Elon Musk and his companies have had a complicated relationship with cryptocurrencies. Tesla made headlines when the company purchased $1.5 billion in Bitcoin in February, before announcing it would accept the crypto as payment in March. Just two months later, Tesla suspended purchases via Bitcoin as a result of the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining.

There had been rumors Musk’s other company, SpaceX, had also purchased Bitcoin, with Anthony Scaramucci saying so in March.

According to TheStreet, Musk has now confirmed the rumors at The B Word conference, saying: “I own Bitcoin, Tesla owns Bitcoin, SpaceX owns Bitcoin.”

The International Business Times reports Musk also said he owns Ethereum crypto as well, driving the price up as much as 12% on the news.

The Deal Is Done: Slack Is Officially Part of Salesforce

The Deal Is Done: Slack Is Officially Part of Salesforce

Salesforce has completed its $27.7 billion acquisition of Slack, combining the leading CRM platform with one of the leading messaging platforms.

The two companies announced in December they had reached a deal for Salesforce to acquire Slack. The deal was seen as a way for both companies to better compete with Microsoft. Microsoft Teams had eclipsed Slack, in terms of user count, thanks in large part to being part of Microsoft 365. Similarly, Microsoft has made it a goal to topple Salesforce as the leading CRM provider.

The deal underwent additional scrutiny by the DOJ before receiving regulatory approval, paving the way for the deal to close.

Executives from both companies highlighted their intent to create a “digital HQ,” to serve as a way for companies to reinvent their productivity.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Slack as part of the Salesforce family, combining the #1 CRM and the trailblazing digital platform for the work anywhere world,” said Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO of Salesforce. “Together we’ll define the future of enterprise software, creating the digital HQ that enables every organization to deliver customer and employee success from anywhere.”

“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rethink and reshape how and where we work,” said Stewart Butterfield, Slack CEO and Co-Founder. “Salesforce and Slack are uniquely positioned to lead this historic shift to a digital-first world. I could not be more excited for what’s to come.”

The deal was welcomed by other companies as well.

“We are obsessed with continually delighting our clients, and offering them the best experience and value across every interaction,” said Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO of IBM. “Salesforce and Slack coming together will help us become more connected, more productive, and more innovative so we can better serve our clients.”

Verizon Reports Record Q2 Results on 5G Growth

Verizon Reports Record Q2 Results on 5G Growth

Verizon has reported its Q2 earnings, breaking records on strong 5G growth.

Verizon reported revenue of $33.8 billion, a 10.9% increase from the year-ago quarter, and up 5.3% from Q2 2019. The company added 275,000 phone net additions, and reported one of its lowest churn rates in recent years, at a mere 0.65% for retail postpaid phones.

The company attributed much of its success to the increased adoption of 5G phones and services, no doubt aided by the company’s recent aggressive 5G upgrade campaign.

“We are executing on our multipurpose network strategy and producing positive results in each of our five growth vectors, recording strong second quarter results. With more connections on our network than anyone else, our already excellent network performance improved in the quarter and was recognized by RootMetrics as the best overall network performance for the 16th time in a row. We are also expanding our 5G Ultra Wideband and 5G Home markets,” said Verizon Chairman and CEO Hans Vestberg. “We are excited about our momentum leading into the second half of the year. We are on track to close both the Tracfone and Verizon Media transactions, and will continue to bring value and choice to our customers.”

The company also raised its guidance for 2021.

“Second quarter results were exceptional, both financially and operationally,” said Verizon Chief Financial Officer Matt Ellis. “Our strong first half performance and the momentum in our business gives us the confidence to raise our total wireless service revenue growth guidance to between 3.5 percent and 4 percent, an update from prior guidance for 2021 total wireless service revenue growth of at least 3 percent. We are also raising our adjusted EPS guidance to the range of $5.25 to $5.35, an update from prior guidance for 2021 adjusted EPS of $5.00 to $5.15.”

Clubhouse Leaves Beta and Is Open to Everyone

Clubhouse, the popular audio-only social media platform, announced it is out of beta and no longer invitation-only.

Clubhouse has gained popularity as a platform for audio chatrooms and conversation, but has been invite-only for the last year. The company used those 12 months to fine-tune the experience, figuring out what works and what doesn’t.

“Twelve never-boring months later, we’re thrilled to share that Clubhouse is now out of beta, open to everyone, and ready to begin its next chapter,” reads the company’s blog. “This means we have removed our waitlist system so that anyone can join. If you have a club, you can post your link far and wide. If you are a creator with an audience, you can bring them all on. If you’re hosting a public event, anyone can attend. You can bring close friends, classmates, family members, coworkers, and anyone else you like — on iOS or Android.”

The news follows the company’s announcement it was adding a direct-message feature called Backchannel.

Twitter Testing a Way to Downvote Replies

Twitter is testing a way to downvote replies, as the company looks for ways to improve engagement.

Twitter User Researcher Cody Elam revealed in a series of tweets that the company is testing a way to vote on replies.

The new feature could be a way for Twitter to combat the vitriol that has become the plague of most social media platforms. Giving people a way to downvote contentious replies could help the platform improve engagement, while cutting down on the toxic environment that drives many users away.

Elon Musk: Tesla Will Open Its Supercharger Network to All Later This Year

Elon Musk: Tesla Will Open Its Supercharger Network to All Later This Year

Elon Musk says his company will open its Supercharger network to electric vehicles (EV) from other companies later this year.

Tesla is currently the leader in the EV market. As such, the company established a network of superchargers, designed to charge its EVs much faster than a standard home charger.

While the company has been criticized for using its own proprietary connector, Musk pointed out in a tweet that his company designed its connector at a time when no one else was making EVs. In that same tweet, however, Musk also said the company planned on opening its Supercharger network to other companies’ vehicles.

The announcement is good news for the larger market, and could help other companies more quickly bring their vehicles to market by using Tesla’s existing network.
