VMware Wants to ‘Empower Today’s Anywhere Workforce’

VMware has launched VMware Anywhere Workspace in an effort to help companies and employees thrive in a remote work environment.

VMware’s virtualization platform already powers some of the biggest names in tech, and now the company is turning its expertise toward helping companies succeed with their remote workforce.

“Work is what you do, not where you do it. As businesses reimagine where and how teams collaborate and innovate, they must do more than transform. They must reform their mindset to create a digital-first culture that puts employee experience first,” said Sanjay Poonen, chief operating officer, customer operations, VMware. “We developed VMware Anywhere Workspace with this new way of working in mind. It will play an important role in creating stronger, more focused, and more resilient businesses.”

VMware Anywhere Workspace is designed to provide robust security and make it easier for IT to support remote employees. To achieve this, the platform combines three solutions in one: VMware Workspace One, VMware Carbon Black Cloud and VMware SASE.

Together the three solutions provide unified endpoint management, desktop and app virtualization, cloud-native endpoint and workload protection, cloud-delivered security functions, and a host of employee productivity, experience and security solutions.

“A truly hybrid workforce is one that is enabled to work in any location, across any network and device, and with no trade-offs when it comes to employee productivity. However, delivering against this ideal has proven challenging for businesses that often rely on a complex set of legacy security practices and technologies,” said Adam Holtby, Principal Analyst, Omdia. “New security, management, and employee productivity solutions and practices are needed if businesses are to optimally enable and secure a more hybrid, anywhere workforce. This value proposition is at the core of VMware’s new solution, and it is one that has great potential to help the vendor become an important partner for businesses looking to embrace the Future of Work.”

VMware Anywhere Workspace is available today.

Facebook Wants to ‘Normalize’ Its Data Scraping Leaks

Facebook Wants to ‘Normalize’ Its Data Scraping Leaks

Facebook is looking to take the heat off itself for the recent leak of 533 million records scraped from its site by normalizing that type of incident.

Scraping involves pulling data from a target website, often using automated means. In most cases, it’s not technically a major hack since the data is available on the site. However, many membership-based sites, such as Facebook, can take measures to prevent scraping.

In the case of Facebook’s issue that led to 533 million records being scraped and later released online, it was the result of a vulnerability that allowed the data to be scraped. Facebook was widely criticized for its response, essentially taking the approach that since this was an old issue, it wasn’t a big deal — despite the fact the data was just released into the wild.

Facebook has now given users even greater reason to be upset, thanks to a memo it accidentally sent to a journalist for Belgian publication Data News (via CNET).

“Longer term, though, we expect more scraping incidents and think its important to both frame this as a broad industry issue and normalize the fact that this activity happens regularly,” said the email.

The full content of the email was even more appalling.

Essentially, Facebook is complaining about the negative coverage it has received over the incident and its response, and is anticipating people’s interest waning and the coverage eventually stopping. Long-term, the company plans to write a post about its anti-scraping activities, and help “normalize the fact that this activity happens regularly.”

Unfortunately, Facebook’s response is anything but normal — and doesn’t even come close to acceptable or responsible. As one of the single biggest purveyors of people’s data, the company has a responsibility to do a lot more than take the approach: “Oh well…stuff happens, data gets scraped, there’s not much we can do about…so deal with it.”

iPhone 13 to Bring mmWave Support to International Models

WebProNews
iPhone 13 to Bring mmWave Support to International Models

The iPhone 13 will reportedly widen support for mmWave, brining it to iPhones sold internationally, rather than just the US models.

mmWave is the fastest flavor of 5G, although it has limited range and building penetration. When the iPhone 12 was released, it only supported mmWave 5G in the US. International models only support 5G bands in the sub-6GHz range.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, via MacRumors, Apple is set to change that with the iPhone 13.

While 5G smartphone shipments increased significantly in 2020, most of them only supported Sub-6 GHz. We believe that mmWave will create more diverse applications than Sub-6 GHz because of the benefits of faster speed and lower latency. The mmWave model of the ‌iPhone 12‌ only supports the US market, and the shipment allocation of the total ‌iPhone 12‌ is about 30–35%. We predict that the ‌iPhone 13‌ mmWave models will be available in more countries (e.g., Canada, Japan, Australia, and major European mobile operators), so the shipment allocation of ‌iPhone 13‌ mmWave models will increase substantially to 55–60%.

Kuo has a solid track record predicting Apple’s next moves. His latest prediction is good news for international iPhone users.

J.P. Morgan Raises Alphabet Price Target

J.P. Morgan Raises Alphabet Price Target

J.P. Morgan has raised the price target for Alphabet stock to $2,575 from $2,390, citing the company’s fundamentals.

The advertising industry was hit especially hard in the early days of the pandemic. Like many companies, Google’s parent initially faced challenges and uncertainty as a result. Advertising has since rebounded, and Alphabet has been aggressively diversifying into other business, especially cloud computing.

According to TheStreet, J.P. Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth believes those fundamentals put the the company in a good position to benefit long-term.

“We remain positive on Alphabet, as we believe it is well positioned across ads, clouds, and a number of other key initiatives to both drive and benefit from long-term digital trends,” Anmuth wrote.

“And it has an attractive combination of top-line scale, growth and margins, supporting our view that valuation remains attractive at 27 times our 2022 estimated Alphabet GAAP earnings per share, or 22 times our 2022 estimated GAAP earnings per share excluding cash and other bets.”

Xbox Cloud Gaming for iOS and PC Entering Beta

Xbox Cloud Gaming for iOS and PC Entering Beta

Microsoft has announced its Xbox Cloud Gaming will enter beta Tuesday, giving users the opportunity to test the service on PCs and iOS devices.

Microsoft has been working to bring Xbox gaming to more devices and platforms, rather than simply the console that started it all. A key component of the strategy is bringing the gaming service to Windows 10 and iOS/iPadOS devices. The company has reached the next step in the process, with the service entering an invitation-only beta tomorrow.

Starting tomorrow, we’ll begin sending out invites to select Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members to start testing the Xbox Cloud Gaming limited beta for Windows 10 PCs and Apple phones and tablets via web browsers. We’re launching xbox.com/play where invitees can play over 100 Xbox Game Pass titles through Edge, Google Chrome, or Safari. Offering cloud gaming through the browser and having a simplified, universal landing page presents a great opportunity to make cloud gaming approachable to more players in more places over time.

The beta will help Microsoft evaluate its progress and make any necessary changes.

Those who receive an invite just need a compatible Bluetooth or USB-connected controller or can use custom touch controls for more than 50 games to start playing and testing. In the early stages of the beta, we’ll be focusing on fine-tuning features and creating a consistent experience across platforms, while making sure games are running their best.

The company hopes to open up access to all Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members in the coming months.

A Look at Advancing Digital Health Trends

WebProNews
A Look at Advancing Digital Health Trends

Throughout the pandemic, we have seen the way that digital health trends has taken an active role in bettering our society.  It has kept us connected with loved ones, allowed us to buy essentials online, helped us get an education or go to work, and we have even seen it in healthcare.

Yes, the pandemic contributed to the rapid digitalization of the healthcare industry but this has been going on way longer than anyone has thought.  Driven by five main reasons, digitization will be the future of healthcare.

The first thing that has aided digital healthcare is that the people who provide it, doctors, have become more digital.  Studies show that over 90% of practicing physicians utilize social media sites such as Yourube and Facebook in some professional capacity.

Many doctors look to sites such as Sermo, UptoDate, or WebMD when they have medical questions of their own.  These sites provide quick and efficient answers on troubling cases versus looking them up in a textbook.

The second reason is that doctors who embrace technology are thought of as “better doctors.” 59% of doctors who embrace technology are able to come up with more innovative and creative solutions to problems than those doctors who don’t.

They are also more likely to provide a unique recommendation that increases patient engagements.  61% report that they have increased their patient engagements which can lead to an increased rate of positive outcomes and effective follow-up care.

Third, patients are demanding it.  Patients prefer digital healthcare.  Whether it is for the convenience, time involved, or lack of access to transportation, digital healthcare is a patientiant preference.

Patients also believe that digital medicine has made the doctors more compassionate.  63% of patients surveyed said that they had seen an improvement in physician interaction when it is over the Internet.

Those who suffer with chronic illness or diseases have also really appreciated the switch to digital.  They no longer have to feel captive to their disease due to transportation time spent going to numerous appointments.  Over 1 in 3 people with chronic illness have an increased support of preference for digital healthcare.

Fourth, is the complex  relationship between the medical community and the pharmaceutical industry.  With in-person visits falling by 63%, the relationship between pharma and physicians desperately needs to be rethought.  Digitalization could drastically improve the current relationship.  It could also create a better experience for both the medical community and its patients.

Finally, the rise in digitalization is motivated by the future.  Many physicians know and understand that digitalization is just the tipping point when it comes to change.  With revolutionary platforms like patient portals and telehealth, the time for innovation is now and nobody knows what will come next.

The good news is that many of these changes are motivated by a patient’s needs and wants. This could be very beneficial in bringing back patient centered care and increasing the standard of care.  Continued innovation in the medical field will only lead to more positive patient experience. See more about digital health trends changing the way we view healthcare in the visuals below:
