A report by France’s High Council on Climate has warned that 5G deployment could lead to a major spike in CO2 emissions.

Carriers around the world are racing to deploy the next generation of wireless networks. 5G is seen as a revolutionary upgrade, not only for consumers, but also for the enterprise. The speeds 5G provides will help lead to advances in edge computing, AI, autonomous vehicles and private networks.

Unfortunately, the advances 5G brings may come at a cost to the environment. According to the High Council on Climate’s report, 5G deployment could lead to as much as 3 to 7 billion extra tons of CO2 in the atmosphere, according to France 24.

“We request a moratorium and our request is even more relevant today, now that the high council has said that we need to assess the technology’s environmental impact before deploying it,” said Éric Piolle a lawmaker with Europe Écologie-Les Verts, the French Green party.

It remains to be seen if France will put a hold on 5G deployment, although it seems unlikely at this point.

Broadband connections are essential for Americans seeking to get new jobs, and to access school, health care and other government services. Ensuring working families can stay online will pay massive dividends for kids’ education, helping people find jobs and jump starting the economic recovery next year.

The provision should help families struggling with staying connected, and will no doubt assist in the ongoing digital transformation.

IBM has announced it is acquiring European cloud startup Nordcloud to help turbocharge its own cloud ambitions.

IBM made headlines in October when it announced it would be splitting into two companies. The spinoff would take over the 109 year-old company’s legacy business, while the core IBM would focus on the hybrid cloud business.

Not surprisingly, IBM is buying cloud startups that will help it achieve that goal, first Instana, and now Nordcloud. In its 10-year history, Nordcloud has established itself as a leader in the European cloud industry, helping companies get the most from their cloud deployments.

“Our clients are increasingly taking a more holistic approach to application modernization that allows them to operate across a traditional IT environment, private cloud and public clouds,” said John Granger, Senior Vice President, Cloud Application Innovation and Chief Operating Officer, IBM Global Business Services. “IBM’s acquisition of Nordcloud adds the kind of deep expertise that will drive our clients’ digital transformations as well as support the further adoption of IBM’s hybrid cloud platform. Shipping scams are up a whopping 440% as online shopping hits new records amid the pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic has changed how people are doing their holiday shopping, with many opting for online outlets rather than in-person options. Never too far behind any trend, scammers are seeing a potential gold mine.

According to Check Point Software Technologies, a firm specializing in cybersecurity, scammers are trying to trick shoppers into divulging sensitive information. The scammers are impersonating shipping companies, such as Amazon, DHL and Fedex, to get people to lower their guard.

Unlike classic phishing emails that are designed to lure people into giving personal details, credit card info or bank account credentials, these emails are specifically impersonating shipping vendors with different versions of fake messages reporting a “delivery issue” or “Track your shipment” details.

All are trying to lure the recipients to submitting details and stealing credentials or financial data. We believe hackers have specifically chosen this vector in November, as they know that large numbers of online shoppers are waiting for their packages to arrive and are more attentive to shipping-related emails while they may be more aware of more traditional e-commerce related fraud and phishing attempts.

Check Point recommends basic security precautions, such as never giving credentials over email, verifying that any links include the correct domain and not a lookalike, being suspicious of an email that seems overly pushy, as well as any that contain spelling and grammatical errors.

Chinese drone maker DJI is the latest company added to the US trade blacklist, throwing its future into uncertain territory.

The US and China have been locked in a costly trade war, one that has involved casualties on both sides. The US has blacklisted Huawei and ZTE, claiming the telecom companies represent a threat to national security.

Now the US has added DJI to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Entity List, according to Digital Trends. Being on the Entity List means that US companies can’t do business with DJI without a special license. DJI says customers can still purchase its drones, as being on the Entity List primarily impacts the company’s ability to sell to other businesses.
