John Hancock Offers $25 Apple Watches to Regular Exercisers
John Hancock is offering customers who commit to regular exercise an Apple Watch Series 6 or an Apple Watch SE for as little as $25.
John Hancock, life insurance company, has offered Apple Watches since 2017 as part of its John Hancock Vitality Program. The program provides steep discounts on the wearables in exchange for customers exercising. The company now includes Apple’s latest models in the program, offering both the Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE.
“While John Hancock Vitality offers something for everyone, it can be especially impactful and beneficial for people in higher-risk health categories or those who are concerned about their personal health — something that is top of mind for many right now,” said Brooks Tingle, president and CEO of John Hancock Insurance. “Consumers are more mindful of their mortality and we’ve seen an increase in the demand for life insurance. In addition, people are more aware of their baseline health. That’s why we believe we have the right solutions for this time in history — life insurance that provides essential protection in the event of death, combined with the latest in personal health technology, including Apple Watch, to help our customers live longer, healthier lives.”
The program requires customers to pay $25 plus tax, with the remaining balance divided into monthly payments over a two-year period. Customers who exercise regularly will see those payments reduced to as little as $0.

Antitrust Case Against Facebook May Be Next
Just days after the DOJ filed an antitrust case against Google, the FTC may be planning a similar case against Facebook.
Tech giants are under more scrutiny now than at any time since Microsoft’s landmark antitrust case in 2001. The DOJ filed a case against Google over its search and search advertising business. The CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and Twitter have also been called to testify before Congress, in some cases repeatedly.
Now, according to Politico, the five FTC commissioners have met to discuss an antitrust case against Facebook. The company has repeatedly been accused of stifling competition by purchasing smaller rivals it deems a potential or future threat. In addition, Facebook has faced ongoing criticism for its mishandling of user privacy.
Because of the confidential nature of the probe, Politico’s sources spoke anonymously. It’s unknown which way the FTC commissioners are leaning, and a decision is not expected for several weeks. Nonetheless, it’s the latest challenge facing Big Tech in general, and social media in particular.

iPhone 12 Has The Strongest Screen of Any iPhone
The tests are in and the new iPhone 12’s “ceramic shield” screen appears to be the strongest iPhone screen yet.
While 5G may have received much of the attention, one of the major selling points of the iPhone 12 is the ceramic shield screen, the latest innovation coming out of Corning. Ceramic shield is a combination of glass and ceramics, giving the screen far more strength and resilience than glass alone, and even more than some metals, according to CNET.
CNET put the phone though its standard battery of drop tests, and the new screen passed with flying colors. The screen survived being jostled in a purse and slid across tile. It took rubbing the phone with 80-grit sandpaper to finally scratch it.
The new screen faired even better in drop tests, serving multiple falls from various heights without breaking. Even multiple drops from 9 feet was not enough to break the screen.
The back of the phone is still the old-style glass from the iPhone 11, also from Corning, which did not fair as well as the ceramic shield. Even so, the tests are a good sign for iPhone 12 users looking for extra durability.

TikTok Gets a Reprieve As Judge Blocks Ban
A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration’s ban on TikTok, at least temporarily, giving the social media platform a reprieve.
The Trump administration has been trying to ban TikTok, calling the platform a security and privacy threat. The move is widely seen as part of the administration’s trade war with China and its broader attempt to isolate Chinese companies, such as TikTok, WeChat, Huawei and ZTE.
One of the conditions that could have prevented a ban was if TikTok’s parent, ByteDance, agreed to sell TikTok’s US operations to an American company. An initial deal was struck, with Oracle slated to take a 20% ownership stake. While the Trump administration signed off on the deal, the Chinese government did not, leaving a ban on the table.
Now, according to Forbes, “Pennsylvania Judge Wendy Beetlestone blocked that order Friday, issuing a preliminary injunction while the court considers a lawsuit brought by several TikTok content creators.” Judge Beetlestone questioned whether Trump has the authority to unilaterally ban TikTok.
The eventual outcome of the TikTok drama could have far-reaching implications for internet companies all over the world, with many experts warning about the nationalization of the internet.
