Comcast’s Growth Hits a Wall

Comcast’s growth has hit a wall, with the company losing subscribers in both its broadband and cable business.

According to Bloomberg, Comcast has lost 490,000 cable TV subscribers in the third quarter, along with 18,000 broadband customers. While the first figure is better than analysts expected the second figure is significantly worse, as analysts expected the company to add 10,900 subscribers.

“Growth has halted for Comcast — the largest US broadband provider, with 32 million homes,” said Bloomberg Intelligence senior media analyst Geetha Ranganathan. “The company derives 80% of profit from cable, where, even after a pandemic-demand surge, broadband has been hurt by fierce competition and low-move activity among customers.”

Peacock, the streaming service operated by Comcast subsidiary NBCUniversal, was significant bright spot. The service added 4 million paying subscribers in the quarter, bringing its total to 28 million.

Huawei’s Advanced Chip Likely Made With ASML Tech

Huawei’s Advanced Chip Likely Made With ASML Tech

Huawei appears to be using tech from Dutch firm ASML to create advanced chips that took the West by surprise.

The US and its allies have been working to isolate Huawei from advanced semiconductor tech. Despite sanctions, Huawei surprised the industry when it unveiled the Mate 60 Pro, a 7nm-powered smartphone manufactured by Chinese firm SMIC. Officials have been trying to determine how Huawei was able to produce 7nm chips, something no one believed was possible.

According to Bloomberg, it appears SMIC and Huawei used equipment from ASML to create the chips. The Netherlands had previously followed the US in banning Huawei from access to its most advanced tech, but there is no indication the sanctions were broken.

Instead, the most likely explanation is that SMIC legally purchased some of ASML’s less advanced equipment that can still produce 7nm chips. Although the ban has been extended to include that equipment, it doesn’t go into effect until January 2024.

In the meantime, Huawei and other Chinese firms are clearly showing their resilience and ability to continue being competitive despite sanctions.

Fired HP Employees Win Age Discrimination Settlement

Employees fired by HP and HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) have won a multi-million settlement in a case that accused HP of engaging in age discrimination.

According to The Register, a group of Hewlett Packard employees over 40 were laid off in 2015 when the the company split into HP and HPE. The group sued the following year alleging age discrimination.

Now, seven years later, the plaintiffs have reached a settlement with HP and HPE, one in which the defendants admit zero guilt.

“Throughout the litigation, each Defendant has denied, and continues to deny, the allegations described above,” the plaintiffs’ lawyers wrote in the settlement notice.

The settlement made note of the reality that the case could drag on for years with neither side guaranteed a victory.

“The Parties are in a good position to evaluate the risks of continued litigation against the benefits of settlement,” the settlement notice noted. “While plaintiffs won several major motions … they recognize that this ongoing litigation poses significant risks.”

The EV Revolution May Be In Trouble

The electric vehicle revolution may be in trouble, with executives warning the transition is not going as smoothly as they had hoped.

Automakers around the world have set ambitious dates by which they want to have the transition to EVs complete, with many shooting for 2030 – 2035. Unfortunately, according to a report by Insider, the transition is not going very well, with many CEOs and execs concerned about the challenges ahead.

“As we get further into the transformation to EV, it’s a bit bumpy,” said GM CEO Mary Barra, one of the industry’s biggest proponents of a switch to EVs.

“This is a pretty brutal space,” said Mercedes-Benz CFO Harald Wilhelm on an analyst call. “I can hardly imagine the current status quo is fully sustainable for everybody.”

At this point, there are multiple issues impeding adoption, most notably range anxiety and cost. Unfortunately, cost is an issue for both buyer and automaker alike, with Honda and GM recently ending a collaboration to jointly develop affordable EVs.

“After studying this for a year, we decided that this would be difficult as a business, so at the moment we are ending development of an affordable EV,” said Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe.

As Insider points out, the pullback from EVs is justifying Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda’s well-known reservations regarding the feasibility of an all-electric transition.

“People are finally seeing reality,” Toyoda said.

PIRG Calls On Microsoft to Extend Windows 10 Lifespan

PIRG Calls On Microsoft to Extend Windows 10 Lifespan

The Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) has called on Microsoft to extend the Windows 10 lifespan to save hundreds of millions of PCs from the landfill.

Windows 10 is slated for end-of-life in October 2025. Unfortunately, Windows 11 has hardware requirements that some 400 million PCs can’t meet. As a result, the PIRG says Windows 10’s demise could lead to the single biggest obsolescence event in computing history.

“Microsoft abandoning Windows 10 could cause the obsolescence of more computers than any single action ever,” said PIRG’s Designed to Last Campaign Director Lucas Rockett Gutterman. ”Microsoft needs to rethink this decision and continue providing security updates for the millions of people who can’t upgrade their computers, for the sake of both their finances and the environment.”

The PIRG’s petition is addressed to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and includes the following:

Microsoft’s decision to stop supporting millions of functional computers in our hospitals, businesses, and homes is a raw deal for customers who expect their expensive devices to last. All software reaches a point at which it’s no longer supported, but when the consequences to our environment are this large we shouldn’t accept it.

As PIRG points out, Microsoft’s stances on Windows 10 is uncharacteristic, given how long the company has supported previous versions of the operating system, such as Windows XP.

“Given these past actions of Microsoft, it’s surprising that the company is forcing the transition to Windows 11. Not only is this bad for consumers, it’s also bad for the planet, since the outdated computers will add to our growing piles of toxic e-waste,” concluded Gutterman.

If Microsoft fails to listen to the PIRG and other critics, many businesses and individuals should look at Linux as a viable alternative. For example, Linux Mint is specifically designed to help ease the transition from Windows to Linux, offering a familiar interface and user experience. Unlike Windows 11, however, Linux Mint is designed to run on a wide range of new and old hardware, and will generally offer a far superior experience.

GM’s Cruise Pauses Driverless Operations Across the US

GM’s Cruise Pauses Driverless Operations Across the US

GM’s Cruise is pausing driverless operations across the US after California regulators suspended the company’s operations over safety concerns.

Cruise suffered a major setback when California regulators deemed the company’s self-driving tech was not safe, even going so far as to accuse the company of misrepresenting its capabilities. A Cruise driverless vehicle was involved in an accident in which it ran over a pedestrian that had already been hit by another vehicle in a hit-and-run incident. While the Cruise vehicle was not responsible for the initial accident, it did not take the necessary action to recognize and avoid hitting the already-struck pedestrian.

In the wake of California’s decision, Cruise says it is pausing driverless operations across the country “to rebuild public trust.” The company announced the news on X:

(1/3) The most important thing for us right now is to take steps to rebuild public trust. Part of this involves taking a hard look inwards and at how we do work at Cruise, even if it means doing things that are uncomfortable or difficult.

(2/3) In that spirit, we have decided to proactively pause driverless operations across all of our fleets while we take time to examine our processes, systems, and tools and reflect on how we can better operate in a way that will earn public trust.

(3/3) This isn’t related to any new on-road incidents, and supervised AV operations will continue.

We think it’s the right thing to do during a period when we need to be extra vigilant when it comes to risk, relentlessly focused on safety, & taking steps to rebuild public trust.

The UK’s Online Safety Act Is Now Officially Law

The UK has officially passed the Online Safety Act, a controversial bill aimed at making the internet safer for children and adults.

The UK has been working to pass the Online Safety Act for some time, stirring up controversy along the way. The bill had provisions to weaken end-to-end encryption (E2EE), a move that led to Apple, Signal, and WhatsApp to threaten to pull their services from the country if the bill passed. Ultimately, lawmakers backed down on the threat to E2EE, opening the door for the law to pass.

According to a government press release, the Online Safety Bill has received Royal Assent, making it the law of the land.

Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said:

Today will go down as an historic moment that ensures the online safety of British society not only now, but for decades to come.

I am immensely proud of the work that has gone into the Online Safety Act from its very inception to it becoming law today. The Bill protects free speech, empowers adults and will ensure that platforms remove illegal content.

At the heart of this Bill, however, is the protection of children. I would like to thank the campaigners, parliamentarians, survivors of abuse and charities that have worked tirelessly, not only to get this Act over the finishing line, but to ensure that it will make the UK the safest place to be online in the world.

It remains to be seen if lawmakers will revisit their efforts to weaken E2EE, or if they will appreciate the role E2EE plays in protecting internet users of all types, including children.

X execs have tried to pass off the company’s health and prospects as on the upswing, but a new report by Axios indicates nothing could be further from the truth. Worldwide app downloads have dropped 38%, with downloads in the US dropping a whopping 57%.

Musk previously said the platform lost roughly 60% of its ad business post-purchase. While CEO Linda Yaccarino has said advertisers are returning to the platform, evidence would suggest otherwise, with the world’s biggest advertisers still shunning it.

Meanwhile, Threads is on a roll, with the platform delivering on Mark Zuckerberg’s promise to continue improving and adding features. Threads has now topped 120 million monthly active users, and 33 million daily active users, and shows no signs of abating.

Sergey Brin’s Pathfinder 1 Airship Receives FAA Clearance

Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s airship company, LTA Research, has received a green light from the FAA to fly the Pathfinder 1 airship.

Airships were a common sight nearly a century ago, before the Hindenburg disaster sounded the death knell for the industry. With climate change a growing threat, and advancements in electric vehicles, airships are poised for a comeback.

According to IEEE Spectrum, LTA Research has received FAA clearance to fly its Pathfinder 1 airship. The airship uses helium, rather than the explosive hydrogen gas that doomed the Hindenburg, and uses electric motors to achieve up to 120 kilometers per hour. LTA Research plans to use the airships for cargo and humanitarian missions.

“Pathfinder 1’s experimental flight test program is to demonstrate and establish the flight envelope for the airship…. LTA’s test plan is tailored to include substantial indoor and outdoor ground testing, using a build-up approach to gradually increase the flight envelope,” the company wrote in its application to the FAA.

If LTA Research is successful, the company could help usher in a new golden era of airships.

According to the National Post, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) want the law expanded to cover Apple and its Apple News service. The government says it is still working through the various proposals.

“As we’ve said all along, we are open to good and constructive ideas to improve the proposed framework. Apple Throws Its Weight Behind Federal Right-to-Repair Efforts

Apple Throws Its Weight Behind Federal Right-to-Repair Efforts

Apple continues to modify its stance on right-to-repair, throwing its weight behind federal legislation.

Big Tech earned a reputation for being opposed to right-to-repair laws, with Apple often viewed as the poster child of such opposition. While the company may have been characteristically silent on the matter publicly, it is notorious for having some of the most difficult-to-repair devices on the market.

In recent months, however, Apple has been changing its stance, even backing California’s right-to-repair legislation. According to TechCrunch, Apple is now backing federal right-to-repair efforts.

Apple VP of Service and Operations Management, Brian Naumann, outlined the company’s position, as well as some valid concerns:

“We believe that a uniform federal repair law should do the following,” the executive said, “maintain privacy, data and device security features, which help to thwart theft; ensure transparency for consumers about the type of parts used in a repair; apply prospectively, to allow manufacturers to focus on building new products that can comply with the proposals; and, finally, create a strong national standard that benefits consumers across the U.S. and reduces the confusion created by potentially conflicting state approaches.”

Apple’s change of course is a major development in the right-to-repair effort and will no doubt help push such legislation forward.

Why Your IT Costs Are So High (and What to Do About Them)

WebProNews
Why Your IT Costs Are So High (and What to Do About Them)

Technology can be powerful for your business, but it can also be exorbitantly expensive. Countless businesses, from small startups to large enterprises, struggle with excessive IT costs.

What should you do if your IT spending starts to exceed your capacity? How can you keep these costs down without making major functionality or security sacrifices?

The Universal Solutions to High IT Costs

Because there are so many different types of businesses and so many philosophies for running an IT department, it’s hard to form truly universal strategies that work for all contexts.

However, there are a few universal approaches that can be used to address almost any application of high IT spending.

·       Utilize managed IT services. Arguably the best solution is to utilize managed IT services. In this arrangement, you’ll work with a third party for most or all of your IT team needs. This addresses many issues simultaneously, reducing your personnel costs, improving overall efficiency, and potentially connecting you to cheaper and more efficient IT strategies without forcing you to sacrifice any functionality or security. The trick is to find the right IT service provider; you need to find a competent team of experts with genuine experience working with businesses like yours, and you need to find a set of services that works for your needs and budget. This isn’t always easy, but if you can find a good fit, most of your IT spending problems can be resolved.

·       Diagnose the root causes. If you choose not to work with managed IT service providers, it’s going to be on you to diagnose the root causes of your high IT spending. There are hundreds of little factors that can force your IT spending unnecessarily higher, and it’s your job to figure out what those are so you can address them.

·       Address the root causes. Making things even more complicated, each root cause of high IT spending can typically be addressed with a wide variety of potential solutions. The best solution is going to depend on your specific circumstances, and it’s not always clear.

Why Your IT Costs Are So High

These are some of the most common root causes of high IT costs, which can typically be addressed in many different ways.

·       Generally rising prices. Costs are rising across the board, thanks to a combination of economic issues. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about this, but it’s still important to acknowledge. Check to see if your IT costs are rising disproportionately to your other business costs.

·       Core personnel costs. Many businesses strive to maintain an internal IT team. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, and it does bring some advantages, but it also increases your personnel costs – which can be prohibitively expensive. If you feel like your department is hemorrhaging money, it might be time to reduce personnel costs by reducing staffing and working with a third party instead.

·       Employee turnover. Employee turnover can be ridiculously expensive, especially for technical positions. If your IT department is a revolving door, it’s important to take a look at why people are leaving so you can figure out a way to address it. Is morale low? Are people leaving your business for better-paying or more exciting positions? What can you do to retain your best talent?

·       In-house resources. Similarly, your IT department might face higher costs because it’s relying too extensively on in-house resources. For example, managing your own servers comes with several advantages, including total accessibility and transparency, but it’s also much more expensive than utilizing cloud services. Even if you’re not willing to abandon your in-house infrastructure entirely, you can benefit from hybridization or virtualization.

·       Hardware and software bloat. Some businesses spend too much on IT because of hardware or software bloat. In other words, they spend money on equipment and services that they don’t really need. Effective trimming can assist you here.

·       Inefficient resource allocation. Inefficient IT planning and resource allocation can cripple your budget, minimizing your capabilities while consistently increasing your spending. Visualizing your network and achieving greater transparency can help you diagnose these specific issues so you can effectively address them.

·       Lack of a coherent purchasing strategy. You might also be spending too much money upfront. If you’re willing to pursue alternative options, like purchasing used hardware or using open-source software, and you’re willing to negotiate with your suppliers, you can save a lot of money.

·       Scaling issues. Scaling your business is always expensive, but it’s even more expensive if you don’t have an efficient scaling strategy in place. In an ideal situation, a business would proactively plan for scaling, creating IT infrastructure that’s easy to expand over time – but unfortunately, many young businesses rely on improvisation, so by the time they achieve a bigger size, they have inordinately complex IT problems to solve. It’s tough to correct this after the problem has already set in, but a “back to basics” approach could help you strip down your architecture and achieve the scalability you always should have had.

High IT costs can bog your business down, especially if you don’t address them proactively. But with the help of a managed IT service provider, and a willingness to pin down and address specific root causes, you’ll be in a much better position to keep these expenses under control.

T-Mobile Backtracks On Automatic Upgrade to More Expensive Plans

T-Mobile is backtracking on a controversial plan to automatically upgrade users to more expensive plans.

The magenta carrier angered users when news broke that it planned to automatically upgrade users to more expensive plans. The company confirmed the plan to CNET, saying it would impact “a small number who were on older rate plans,” although T-Mobile did not clarify how many “a small number” meant.

According to The Mobile Report, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert is now backtracking on the plan, saying it was taken out of context in an email to company employees:

Last week, some internal training documents were leaked to a website that covers mobile industry updates. The media quickly picked up the information and ran with it, as they often do with leaks. Unfortunately, docs like this — without more context — leave a lot of room for interpretation. In this case, it was largely inaccurate and caused a lot of confusion for our customers (rightfully so!).

I’m sure people are also asking many of you what’s going on. So I wanted to offer a bit more background to help answer questions you may be getting.

First, the biggest piece of missing context was that the leaked materials related to a very small test, which is something that is normal course for our business. Tests like these help us design new programs, offers and promotions, and, probably most important, ensure we are getting the experience right for our customers. In this case, we hope our customers will be thrilled with the new benefits and services they will eventually receive, but we’ll look forward to learning from them along the way. And as always, we’ll make adjustments or shifts as needed over time.

Sievert also emphasized the test has not yet begun, and impacted customers will be notified of the impending change when the test begins.

Sievert’s comments appear to contradict T-Mobile’s own spokesperson, who had confirmed the plan to CNET. Either way, the entire fiasco is a major misstep for a company that tries to set itself apart with its customer service.

1Password Reveals Incident Resulting From Okta Breach

1Password has revealed it has suffered a security incident as a result of Okta’s support system breach.

On October 20, 2023, Okta announced it had suffered a breach of its support case management system:

Okta Security has identified adversarial activity that leveraged access to a stolen credential to access Okta’s support case management system.

The threat actor was able to view files uploaded by certain Okta customers as part of recent support cases. It should be noted that the Okta support case management system is separate from the production Okta service, which is fully operational and has not been impacted. In addition, the Auth0/CIC case management system is not impacted by this incident.

1Password has confirmed that it suffered a security incident that is directly a result of Okta’s breach:

We detected suspicious activity on our Okta instance related to their Support System incident. After a thorough investigation, we concluded that no 1Password user data was accessed.

On September 29, we detected suspicious activity on our Okta instance that we use to manage our employee-facing apps. We immediately terminated the activity, investigated, and found no compromise of user data or other sensitive systems, either employee-facing or user-facing.

Since then, we’ve been working with Okta to determine the initial vector of compromise. As of late Friday, October 20, we’ve confirmed that this was a result of Okta’s Support System breach.

Despite the incident, it is good news that no user data was accessed.

Microsoft says it has fixed the issue in an upcoming release, giving users the ability to turn off the feature:

Tips and Tricks

  • You can enable or disable the following options:
    • Remove leading zeros from numerical text and convert to a number.
    • Truncate numerical data to 15 digits of precision and convert to a number that may be displayed in scientific notation, if needed.
    • Convert numerical data surrounding the letter “E” to a number displayed in scientific notation.
    • Convert a continuous string of letters and numbers to a date.
  • When you select the When loading a .csv file or similar file, notify me of any automatic number conversions check box, Excel displays a warning message when it detects that at least one of the optional automatic data conversions is enabled and about to occur when opening a .csv or .txt file. The message gives the ability to open the file once without converting the data.

The change should be a welcome improvement for scientists.

Bottles Announces Next-Gen ‘Bottles Next’

WebProNews
Bottles Announces Next-Gen ‘Bottles Next’

The developers behind the popular Bottles application have announced the next-gen edition: “Bottles Next.”

Bottles is a popular way of running Windows applications on Linux and macOS, providing an easy-to-use implementation of the WINE translation layer. Bottles allows users to choose whether they want to install a game or standard application and provides the ability to use pre-existing application installers or load up a custom one.

The Bottles developers have announced they are working on a next-gen version of the program, one that will add a number of new features and abilities. The developers say Bottles Next is a necessary step as a result of the current codebase.

If you’ve been a long-time Bottles user, you’ve gotten used to frequent releases that brought lots of new features and bug fixes. However, over the past year, this has become less frequent. This is because Bottles, like many other projects before it, has reached a point where implementing new features without making drastic changes to the codebase is no longer possible. This doesn’t mean Bottles is stagnant; it’s far from it. We’re still adding small features and fixing critical bugs that don’t require a complete codebase overhaul.

The new edition will fix issues that are not fixable with the current version:

Bottles Next is our response to the needs of users and the market for running Windows software on Linux and MacOS. We’ve redesigned Bottles from scratch to address all the issues and shortcomings that are currently unresolvable due to the existing codebase. The Next project is designed for scalability and extensibility over time, with the goal of avoiding the need for another complete rewrite.

The developers say the new version will have a GUI based on Electron and VueJS3, although it will maintain a secondary GTK frontend for users who prefer the GTK look.

The developers also believe there is no way to add all the features they plan into a single experience, so they will be releasing Bottles Next with two different modes: Next and Classic.

The Next mode simplifies Bottles usage significantly. There won’t be individual bottle management; Bottles will create and manage a single bottle, leaving users with the task of installing and running the software they need. The Next bottle will use a layering concept to isolate applications, dependencies, and configurations. This means that the underlying wineprefix will be the same, but each application will have its settings (DXVK, VKD3D, FSR, desktop resolution, environment variables, launch options, dependencies, etc.). This minimizes the risk of bottle breakage to just external interferences.

The Classic mode, on the other hand, will provide advanced users with the same bottle management capabilities as before. It will introduce many new features for taking full control of their bottles in different environments (Gaming, Software, Custom, and Next). Users can still create Next-type bottles, incorporating the layering and application-specific configuration concepts.

Bottles Next will also improve Steam compatibility, offering better small-screen optimizations. The new version will also support cloud backup, giving users the ability to easily restore their bottles.

The developers say the new version is still months away from release, but they will continue to add bug fixes and low-impact features to the existing version.

The announcement is great news for Linux and Mac users alike, giving them an even more powerful option to run Windows software.

Traditional Radio Still Dominates the Audio Experience in Vehicles

Despite the advent of satellite radio, Apple’s CarPlay, and Android Auto, but traditional AM/FM radio still dominates.

A new report by Edison Research shows that new isn’t always better, with AM/FM radio still accounting for the majority of drivers’ listening time. In fact, among drivers who DO NOT have CarPlay or Android Auto, 67% listen to AM/FM radio, compared to just 9% who listen to audio streaming services, 12% who listen to SiriusXM, and just 4% who listen to podcasts. Interestingly, legacy options, such as CDs, still account for 8% of drivers’ audio time.

Among drivers who do have CarPlay or Android Auto the situation changes, although traditional radio still has the largest percentage of listeners at 46%, although other audio options certainly benefit from CarPlay and Android Auto:

The bottom bar shows that those who do have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in their primary vehicles spend twice as much time streaming: 18% of their daily in-car audio time is spent streaming, compared with 9% of daily in-car audio time spent streaming by those without the systems. They also spend more of their daily in-car audio time with podcasts than listeners who don’t have the systems: 7% compared with 4%. Listeners who do have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto spend 46% of their time with AM/FM — 27% less than those who don’t have CarPlay or Auto.

Japan Opens Antitrust Investigation Into Google

Google is facing yet more antitrust issues, with the Japan Fair Trade Commission opening an investigation.

According to CNBC, Japan Fair Trade Commission announced it would open a probe into the search giant over antitrust concerns related to how it operates its search on mobile devices. In particular, the regulator wants to determine if Google pressured smartphone makers not to include rival search engines on their devices in exchange for a share of Google’s ad revenue.

Google denied that it had engaged in any wrongdoing in a statement to the outlet.

“Its openness and flexibility ensure that users always have a choice to customize their devices to suit their needs, including the way they browse and search the internet, or download apps,” a company spokesperson told CNBC.

Google is already facing multiple challenges to its business, including a high-stakes antitrust trial in the US that could have profound implications for the company.

Huawei Is Gaining Ground In AI, and the US Has Only Itself to Blame

Huawei is gaining ground in the AI revolution, developing chips to challenge Nvidia, and the US has only itself to blame.

The US has been engaged in an extended campaign to restrict China’s access to advanced technologies, including the semiconductors necessary for AI development. Actions have included cutting off Chinese firms — such as Huawei — from access to US tech and restricting American firms from doing business with their Chinese counterparts.

According to a new report by Reuters, that strategy may be backfiring, with experts saying Huawei is working to replace Nvidia in the Chinese market, where it has controlled as much as 90% of the AI chip market.

“This U.S. move, in my opinion, is actually giving Huawei’s Ascend chips a huge gift,” Jiang Yifan, chief market analyst at brokerage Guotai Junan Securities, said in a post on his Weibo account.

Analysts say Huawei’s Ascend chips still lag behind Nvidia in performance, but they are comparable in raw computing power. While Huawei clearly has a ways to go before it can fully replace Nvidia, the more the US restricts China’s access to Nvidia’s tech, the more the country and its companies will be motivated to escalate efforts to catch up.

In the meantime, Huawei is the company poised to benefit the most from US efforts, a strange turn of events given how much US regulators have tried to cripple the company.

Gift Card Nation: Convenience, Sustainability Concerns Drive Rise in Giving of Experiences and Other Non-Tangible Gifts

Gift Card Nation: Convenience, Sustainability Concerns Drive Rise in Giving of Experiences and Other Non-Tangible Gifts

The traditional view of the holidays is marked by the exchange of physical gifts under the Christmas tree—a book for the bookworm, an apron for the chef, running shoes for the fitness enthusiast.

But that romantic concept is increasingly no longer the reality, based on survey data from the tech firm Recurly. Led by younger consumers, gift-givers are increasingly opting for gift cards and other non-tangible gifts—usually for convenience, but increasingly for other reasons as well, such as sustainability and minimalism.

In its new survey, “Unwrap the Subscriptions: 2023 Holiday Trends,” Recurly asked consumers about their preferences for non-tangible gifts like gift cards and streaming subscriptions vs. traditional wrapped, physical gifts like clothes, wallets and perfume. The data shows that the preference for giving physical gifts in person declines as respondents get younger. While it’s at 50% for Boomers, it decreases steadily, generation by generation, with only 23% of Gen Z citing this as a reason they prefer not to send non-tangible gifts.

Gen Z is also the most likely generation to have ever received one example of a non-tangible gift—a gift subscription, with 42% saying they had received one, compared to 40% of Millennials, 24% of Gen X, 14% of younger Boomers, and 22% of older Boomers. This shows a consistent trend of non-tangible gifts becoming more and more popular the younger the consumer.

In a supplemental survey, respondents were asked if they thought there was a generational difference in attitudes toward tangible gift-giving during the holidays. Nearly half (47%) of respondents said, “Yes, older people prefer to give tangible gifts,” vs. only 15% who said that younger people prefer to give tangible gifts. Another 30% said there was no difference is gift-giving preference based on age, and 8% said they weren’t sure.

(All images/graphs can also be found in this folder here)

What’s driving this change for younger consumers? Convenience is a major factor, with 54% of respondents citing this as a primary reason they mostly give gift cards. In fact, fully 13% of respondents said they primarily give gifts cards for the holidays even though they enjoy giving tangible gifts more. Younger men, in particular, are driven by convenience in gift-giving, with 22% of men under 35 saying they primarily give gift cards despite enjoying giving tangible gifts more.

While convenience is an important factor steering younger consumers to gift cards, it is not the only reason. Many younger consumers say they prefer gift cards or other non-tangible gifts (e.g., cooking classes or spa days) because they are eco-friendly, to embrace minimalism, or because they give longer-lasting memories than physical gifts.

In fact, 67% of adult respondents under 35 said they expect a further shift to more environmentally-friendly gift options in the future. In addition, 41% of those under 35 who still prefer to give tangible gifts said they would consider switching to non-tangible gifts to “reduce waste and promote sustainability” in the future.

WhatsApp Gets Mission Impossible-Type Voice Notes

WhatsApp is getting Mission Impossible-style notes, giving users the option to send Voice notes that self-erase after playing.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing the new feature with some beta testers:

A new view once icon is available within the chat bar while recording a voice note with a lock. When you tap this icon, the voice note will be sent in view once mode, so the recipient cannot export, forward, save, and record it. After sending the voice note with the view once mode enabled, you won’t be able to listen to it and the recipient can no longer listen to the voice note after dismissing it. This mode effectively minimizes the chances of unauthorized access or later listening, providing a new layer of privacy for sensitive and confidential information.

The new feature is rolling out to both iOS and Android, but you’ll still need to provide your own Mission Impossible background music.

AlmaLinux Maintain RHEL Compatibility As Promised

AlmaLinux Maintain RHEL Compatibility As Promised

AlmaLinux appears to be succeeding in its goal to provide Red Hat Enterprise Linux compatibility despite recent challenges.

Red Hat rocked the Linux and open-source world when it announced it would restrict RHEL source access to paying customers. The motivation was an effort to stifle downstream builds — such as AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, and Oracle Linux — that were built off of RHEL. The move sparked massive backlash, with each of the downstream distros announcing various efforts to work around Red Hat’s decision.

AlmaLinux announced it would abandon 1:1 compatibility with RHEL, focusing instead on Application Binary Interface (ABI) compatibility. According to ZDNet, it appears AlmaLinux is succeeding in its goal.

At the open-source All Things Open convention, AlmaLinux chairperson benny Vasquez described how the RHEL clone is pulling from the upstream CentOS Stream, which is the same base RHEL uses.

“Of all the packages, 99% still exactly look at RHEL.” Vasquez said. Of those that don’t, “about 24% of those packages require manual patching.”

Red Hat’s kernel patches are still posing a bit of a challenge since “you can’t get those kernel updates without violating Red Hat’s licensing agreements. What we do is we pull the security patches from various other sources, and, if nothing else, we can find them when Oracle releases them,” since Oracle has promised continued 1:1 RHEL compatibility.

As ZDNet points out, Vasquez says a major benefit of the change has been the freedom to move faster than RHEL on critical updates.

“For example, the AMD microcode exploits were patched before Red Hat because they took a little bit of extra time to get out the door. We then pulled in, tested, and out the door about a week ahead of them.”

Despite Red Hat’s actions, it appears at least one of the RHEL clones is thriving and showing how open source can deal with similar threats.

The company tweeted that it has begun testing Musk’s plan, charging some unverified accounts $1 per year to engage with other users.

Starting today, we’re testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription to be able to post & interact with other posts. Within this test, existing users are not affected.

This new test was developed to bolster our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity, while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount. It is not a profit driver.

And so far, subscription options have proven to be the main solution that works at scale.

Google’s Pixel Binary Transparency Keeps Users Safe From Supply Chain Attacks

WebProNews
Google’s Pixel Binary Transparency Keeps Users Safe From Supply Chain Attacks

Google has unveiled a major security feature for Pixel owners, giving them the ability to verify the authenticity of their Pixel’s Android operating system.

Software supply chain attacks are designed to hide their presence from the user. As a result, users may unwittingly run a phone with a compromised OS, giving bad actors unfettered access to their information. Google is making it easier for users to be sure their devices have not been hacked, and their OS is intact with Pixel Binary Transparency.

Software Engineer Jay Hou described the feature in a company blog post:

Pixel Binary Transparency responds to a new wave of attacks targeting the software supply chain—that is, attacks on software while in transit to users. These attacks are on the rise in recent years, likely in part because of the enormous impact they can have. In recent years, tens of thousands of software users from Fortune 500 companies to branches of the US government have been affected by supply chain attacks that targeted the systems that create software to install a backdoor into the code, allowing attackers to access and steal customer data.

One way Google protects against these types of attacks is by auditing Pixel phone firmware (also called “factory images”) before release, during which the software is thoroughly checked for backdoors. Upon boot, Android Verified Boot runs a check on your device to be sure that it’s still running the audited code that was officially released by Google. Pixel Binary Transparency now expands on that function, allowing you to personally confirm that the image running on your device is the official factory image—meaning that attackers haven’t inserted themselves somewhere in the source code, build process, or release aspects of the software supply chain. Additionally, this means that even if a signing key were compromised, binary transparency would flag the unofficially signed images, deterring attackers by making their compromises more detectable.

Google says many users won’t need to use all the features involved in Pixel Binary Transparency, but the ability is there for those that need/want it:

Most Pixel owners won’t ever need to perform the consistency and inclusion proofs to check their Pixel’s image—Android Verified Boot already has multiple safeguards in place, including verifying the hash of the code and data contents and checking the validity of the cryptographic signature. However, we’ve made the process available to anyone who wants to check themselves—the Pixel Binary Transparency Log Technical Detail Page will walk you through extracting the metadata from your phone and then running the inclusion and consistency proofs to compare against the log.

Pioneering Secure Access Service Edge (SASE): A Transformative Frontier in Network Security

WebProNews
Pioneering Secure Access Service Edge (SASE): A Transformative Frontier in Network Security

The ever-evolving digital landscape demands novel and effective solutions to safeguard networks and data. One of the most revolutionary concepts to emerge in recent years is Secure Access Service Edge (SASE). SASE marks a paradigm shift in network security, offering a holistic and adaptable approach to secure remote access, edge computing and data fortification. This article will take an in-depth look at SASE, touching on its fundamental components, its many advantages and its great potential to reshape the future of cybersecurity.

The Essence of SASE

Secure Access Service Edge, affectionately dubbed “SASE,” was introduced by Gartner in 2019 as a forward-thinking concept. This visionary approach heralds a new era in cybersecurity by elegantly harmonizing network security and Wide-Area Networking (WAN) capabilities within a unified cloud-based service.

The fundamental idea underpinning SASE is the seamless and fortified accessibility of applications and data, transcending device and geographical constraints, all while empowering organizations to navigate the ever-expanding digital frontier with unparalleled confidence.

Key Components of SASE

  1. Cloud-Native Elegance: SASE is ingeniously constructed on a cloud-native architecture, which leverages cloud-based services and infrastructure, thereby facilitating scalability and flexibility. This fluidity empowers organizations to swiftly adapt to changing operational demands.
  2. Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN): SD-WAN is the backbone of SASE, orchestrating network performance optimization by intelligently routing traffic and prioritizing mission-critical applications. This ensures an uninterrupted user experience.
  3. The Zero Trust Citadel: SASE is an ardent adherent of the Zero Trust security model, a radical departure from traditional perimeter security. It mandates continuous user and device identity verification, meticulously assessing their trustworthiness prior to granting access. This model is nothing short of a fortress against unauthorized access.
  4. Holistic Security Synergy: SASE integrates an assortment of security services, including firewalls, secure web gateways, data loss prevention and threat detection into a unified platform. This amalgamation simplifies management and does away with security silos, resulting in a more robust defense posture.

SASE’s Assured Advantages

  • Fortified Security Bastion: SASE heralds a new era of security by ingraining the Zero Trust model, assuring that network access is consistently scrutinized and regulated. As the landscape tilts towards remote work, this approach becomes exceedingly pertinent.
  • Supernal Performance Elevation: The SD-WAN technology within SASE elevates network performance, eradicating latency and ensuring the unhindered operation of critical applications. This is of paramount importance to businesses reliant on real-time data and seamless communication.
  • Infinite Scalability and Unrivaled Flexibility: The cloud-native architecture empowers organizations, irrespective of their size, to dynamically scale network and security resources. SASE is inherently designed to be an adaptable security vanguard.
  • Austerity and Operational Efficacy: SASE shatters the shackles of on-premises hardware costs, streamlining the convoluted task of managing multiple security solutions. The frugality that SASE brings is a great benefit.
  • Streamlined Management: SASE’s integrated security services and cloud-based orientation simplify the complex chore of network and security management. This liberation grants IT teams the freedom to allocate their energies toward strategic, forward-thinking objectives.
  • Anticipatory Security Fortifications: The adaptability of SASE to response appropriately to evolving threats is of profound significance. The incorporation of new security services and updates is nimbly executed, thereby assuring an enduring shield against emerging threats.

The Path Forward for Cybersecurity

SASE is destined to fundamentally reshape the cyber defense landscape in many ways:

  1. The Ebbing of Perimeter Security: With SASE the traditional security perimeter has become antiquated in a world marked by remote work and the proliferation of cloud services. It underscores identity-based security, a paradigm where users and devices are meticulously authenticated and authorized, regardless of their physical location.
  2. Resilience Beyond Measure: The cloud-native architecture within SASE provides a safety net through built-in redundancy. High availability and resilience are assured even in the face of network disruptions or malicious attacks.
  3. Emphasizing Data Custodianship: Integrated security services within SASE, including data loss prevention, encrypting sensitive data and ensuring organizations are poised to meet regulatory compliance standards and shield their invaluable data assets.
  4. Compliance without Complexity: SASE’s unified platform streamlines the arduous task of adhering to regulatory compliance standards. This is a boon for organizations grappling with an intricate web of regulations.
  5. Global Network Reach: With the ability to tap into SASE services from any corner of the world, organizations can expand their operational boundaries without trading security or performance for global reach.

Conclusion

Secure Access Service Edge is a monumental leap forward in network security. Fusing cloud-native elegance, SD-WAN, the Zero Trust model and integrated security services into one unified platform, SASE doesn’t just bolster security, but also revamps performance, scalability and cost-effectiveness. In an era where remote work and cloud adoption are the norm, SASE is primed to play a pivotal role in the future of cybersecurity, arming organizations with the tools to secure their data and networks in a dynamic and evolving digital landscape.

Embracing SASE is not merely a technological choice, but a strategic leap toward safeguarding an organization’s digital operations in an uncertain future.

This particular Android ROM has an enterprise focus, “designed from the ground up for use on company-owned hardware like smartphones, tablets, point of sale systems, kiosks, and even x86 computers traditionally designed for desktop applications.”

Esper says Lenovo will release the ThinkCentre M790q Gen 3, ThinkCentre M90n-1 Nano IoT, and ThinkEdge SE30 running Foundation by the end of 2023.

Esper says the combination could help organizations scale their device fleet with minimal issues, especially with the ubiquity of Android devices.

With Android becoming a popular operating system for enterprise dedicated devices and the most popular in the world for use on edge devices, this partner offers a way to easily scale your device fleet with minimal lift. Esper and Lenovo’s combined full-stack solution takes the guesswork out of putting together a robust enterprise solution that marries top tier hardware with robust, secure software and the most advanced Android device management software on the market today.

There’s no doubt a market for exactly what Lenovo and Esper are offering, providing employees with a streamlined workflow based off of a single core operating system.
