Who Hacks the Hackers? Nvidia Does

Nvidia has taken a novel approach to hackers that stole its data, hacking them back and encrypting the data so it can’t be accessed.

According to Tom’s Hardware, hackers from the LAPSU$ group stole some 1TB of data from Nvidia. Rather than pay a ransom or deal with the hackers, Nvidia opted to hack the group instead. Once it gained access to the hackers’ servers, the company encrypted its stolen data, ensuring it can’t be access.

Hacker group Vx-underground reported on Twitter that Nvidia had pulled off the operation.

LAPSU$ extortion group, a group operating out of South America, claim to have breached NVIDIA and exfiltrated over 1TB of proprietary data. LAPSU$ claims NVIDIA performed a hack back and states NVIDIA has successful ransomed their machines

Nvidia has sent a clear signal: Mess with it at your own peril.

Zoom Forecasts Lower Yearly Revenue Than Expected

Zoom Forecasts Lower Yearly Revenue Than Expected

Zoom disappointed analysts by forecasting lower fiscal 2023 revenue than Wall Street was expecting.

Zoom became the poster child for remote work and videoconferencing. Once primarily a tool for the enterprise, the company and platform became a household name, as companies, churches, individuals, and families used it to stay connected.

One of the biggest questions hanging over the company is how it would maintain its growth as things returned to normal. Zoom recently unveiled its Zoom Contact Center in an effort to get back to its enterprise roots and future-proof its growth.

Unfortunately, according to Reuters, the company is still projecting it will miss Wall Street’s estimates for its fiscal 2023 revenue, causing the stock to slide roughly 12%. It remains to be seen if the company will be able to recapture its pandemic-fueled momentum.

Online Tools for New Business Registration

The latest Business Formation Statistics for January 2021 have revealed that the United States has experienced a surge of new businesses. Starting a new business is exciting, and it is only natural for entrepreneurs to feel uncertain and overwhelmed, especially in the beginning as a small business owner. With so many critical choices that need to be made at the onset, new business owners are often left with a multitude of unanswered questions and the constant concern as to what the next step will be.

Add in the fact that with each passing year, especially with the current boom in new businesses, entrepreneurs have more advancements in technology to keep up with. While it can be a lot to take in at first, things such as search engine optimization, email campaigns, content creation, click to tweets, and conversion rates can be invaluable tools to implement into new businesses. Entrepreneurs will experience a whole other world—one that requires hard work and determination.

The internet has become a treasure trove of resources for entrepreneurs, providing vital assistance at the click of a button. Online tools have formed the foundation that allows new businesses to grow faster and better understand the ever-changing marketplace. They enable entrepreneurs to take control and establish a lucrative plan to successfully reach target audiences and put their business on the road to success.

Entrepreneurs are able to do everything from finding a name for their business to securing a domain and even finding a registered agent. LLCs have become one of the most popular business structures for new businesses since they provide the benefits of a sole proprietorship or partnership and a corporation. Entrepreneurs will also receive both financial and legal protection, all the while avoiding double taxation. There is also a distinction between members of the LLC and the business itself; this allows for superior asset protection.

The top states for LLC formation are:

  1. Texas
  2. Nevada
  3. Wyoming
  4. Delaware
  5. Florida

Digital Platforms Dedicated to New Businesses

Entrepreneurs will be pleased to note that there is a wide range of information available to help answer even the toughest of questions. The problem, however, is sorting out fact from fiction and finding a credible source of information.

Government Resources

Government resources are often overlooked; however, the United States government has placed a significant amount of emphasis on growing small businesses over the years. They provide a host of different resources that are available for free at federal, state, and local levels. The government also provides various funding options for new startups, and most allow entrepreneurs to apply for government financial aid online. They also keep businesses up to date with the latest regulation changes and improvements.

Cloud Computing

Most small businesses benefit from cloud computing as it provides benefits such as easier remote working cost-saving and allows for the flexibility of being able to connect to the company anywhere and at any time. With web-enabled devices being a vital part of every person’s day to day life, especially in today’s business environment, it makes accessing data even easier. Business owners have the option of scaling up or down their operation and storage needs fast and efficiently–to suit the situation. This  allows greater flexibility as the company needs change.

Google Analytics

Google analytics is a great platform that allows businesses to gain a deeper understanding of their customers. Users will have access to a range of free tools that allows for the analysis of data for the company in one place. Google will provide unique insights and machine learning capabilities to assist entrepreneurs to get the most out of their data.

Final Thoughts

With so many new businesses the marketplace is open to endless possibilities, while it is easier to start a business today than it was ten years ago, the business world has also become much more competitive. This is why entrepreneurs are encouraged to make the most out of the resources available to them.

Some Google Maps Features Disabled in Ukraine Over Security Concerns

Google has taken the unusual step of disabling some features in Google Maps for Ukraine, likely out of concern Russian forces could use it in their invasion.

Google Maps can provide live information regarding traffic and other conditions, but there has been some concern Russian invasion forces could use the feature to track Ukrainian troop movements or fleeing civilians. For example, according to Reuters, a professor at California’s Middlebury Institute of International Studies was able to track Russian troop buildup on the Ukrainian border before the invasion, a buildup that looked like a traffic jam.

Google’s move comes as tech companies are implementing their own sanctions against Russia in a show of support and solidarity for Ukraine, and in an effort to make the Russian invasion as costly as possible for Vladimir Putin and his allies.

AT&T Installing 5G Small Cell Towers on Street Lights

AT&T Installing 5G Small Cell Towers on Street Lights

AT&T is addressing one of the biggest challenges to 5G deployment, installing small cell towers on street lights.

5G promises to revolutionize a range of industries, delivering speeds once thought impossible. Unfortunately, the fastest varieties of 5G are limited by extremely short range and poor building penetration. AT&T’s solution is to install small cell radios on top of street lamps, significantly improving coverage.

AT&T is using Ericsson’s Street Radio small cell, a convenient option that can be plugged directly into existing streetlights and has a relatively small profile — an important factor in not making streets look like something from a Frankenstein’d cyberpunk future. The installation can also be done in a mere 15 minutes.

“Streetlights are also the perfect deployment point for meeting network infrastructure densification needs because they are typically 8 to 10 meters high, spaced 50 meters apart, have an existing power supply and are within close proximity to fiber,” writes AT&T’s Gordon Mansfield, VP Mobility Access & Architecture. “By using existing infrastructure, this solution reduces costs, streamlines site approval and permitting, and speeds installation. These radios also have smart sensors that allow us to detect failed or downed streetlights in the event of a storm, blackout, or other disruptive event. This helps us in quickly assessing damage and dispatching crews for repairs or alerting the power provider of an issue.”

AT&T’s option is an elegant solution to the problem and may just be what’s needed to make the fastest flavor of 5G more widely available.

T-Mobile Offering Free US/Ukraine Calls For Those Impacted By The Conflict

T-Mobile is offering free calls between the US and Ukraine, in an effort to help those impacted by the conflict.

Russia invaded Ukraine this week, setting off what could become one of the biggest conflicts in Europe in decades. Companies are urging employees to shelter in place, and families are trying to stay in touch with loved ones.

T-Mobile is trying to help friends and families stay in touch, waiving international fees for calls and texts made to and from the US and Ukraine.

From February 24 to March 3, 2022, T-Mobile is waiving international long-distance and international roaming charges for calls and SMS made to/from U.S. and Ukraine for T-Mobile and Sprint postpaid and prepaid consumer and business customers. This includes calls made within Ukraine to local numbers to cover roaming customers in Ukraine.

Dish Network Is Bleeding Customers, But Counting on 5G to Save It

Dish Network reported its fourth-quarter results, and the numbers weren’t pretty as the company races to deploy its 5G network.

Best-known for its satellite TV service, Dish is poised to become the fourth nationwide carrier in the US, replacing Sprint. Although US regulators cleared T-Mobile to purchase Sprint, there was concern about the wireless market consolidating to three major players, instead of four. As a result, as terms for the merger, regulators demanded T-Mobile and Sprint turn over some assets to Dish in an effort to establish it as a successful fourth carrier.

The company has been making major headway in its efforts to roll out its 5G network, and told investors it plans to cover 20% of the US by June, according to CNET. Regulators had previously set June as the deadline for Dish to reach that milestone.

Getting that large a portion of its 5G network up and running can’t happen fast enough for the company. In its latest quarter, Dish reported $522 million in revenue, down from $733 million a year ago. Similarly, EPS came in at $0.87 a share, down from $1.24. The company also lost a net total of 245,000 wireless subscribers and 237,000 pay-TV subscribers.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Chairman Charlie Ergen took responsibility for the delays in the company’s 5G rollout, saying they “just didn’t anticipate that we’d have to do as much on the technical side.”

For Dish’s sake, hopefully the company doesn’t run into any further delays as it pivots to 5G.

Intel Continues to Play From Behind Against Apple’s M1

Intel has been ramping up its efforts to compete with the M1, but it’s still at least a year behind with little hope of catching up.

Apple’s M1 chip took the computing world by storm. Based on the same designs that have been powering the iPhone and iPad for years, the M1 combined industry leading energy efficiency with performance that rivaled Intel’s best chips. The loss of Apple’s business was a major blow to Intel, and shone a spotlight on how much the company has struggled to make competitive mobile chips.

According to 9to5Mac, a leaked Intel roadmap suggests the company may finally have an answer to the M1 in the form of its 15th-generation “Arrow Lake” processors. Intel evidently plans on using TSMC, the same company that produces Apple’s M1, to produce its 3nm Arrow Lake.

Unfortunately for the company, its latest chip won’t actually hit the market until late 2023. By that time, it’s believed Apple will already be on its M2 chips. As a result, while the Arrow Lake will likely best the M1, by the time it shows up it won’t matter — Apple will still be ahead of Intel.

Intel is certainly making progress toward returning to its former glory, but its struggles to beat the M1 demonstrate it still has a ways to go.

Russian Invasion of Ukraine Threatens Fragile Semiconductor Supply

In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, experts are concerned the conflict could significantly impact the semiconductor supply chain.

Semiconductor manufacturers have been struggling to keep up with demand since the outset of the pandemic. Early lockdowns and quarantines impacted supply, while people working from home and avoiding public activities drove up demand.

According to VentureBeat, research firm Techcet attributes Ukraine with supplying 90% of the neon gas used in the lasers the US semiconductor industry relies on to manufacture chips. Further complicating the issue, Russia supplies 35% of the palladium for US chipmakers.

CNBC is reporting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russian troops have been stopped “in most directions,” as of early Friday morning. It’s unclear if the situation will stabilize, or if it will continue to deteriorate.

One thing is certain: The longer the conflict goes on, the more likely the semiconductor supply chain will fall further behind.

Samsung Broke Encryption On 100 Million Phones

WebProNews
Samsung Broke Encryption On 100 Million Phones

The world’s largest smartphone maker shipped roughly 100 million phones with broken encryption, putting its customers at risk.

Modern smartphones rely on encryption to protect data on-device. Android and iOS store the hardware-based encryption keys on the device, taking extreme measures to protect them, given they form the basis of smartphone security.

Unfortunately for Samsung users, the company’s cryptographic design was severely flawed. According to Threatpost, researchers at Tel Aviv University discovered the flaw that makes it possible for attackers to gain access to the cryptographic keys. Researchers are already condemning the company for its amateurish handling of basic cryptographic principles.

“Loosely speaking, AES-GCM needs a fresh burst of securely chosen random data for every new encryption operation – that’s not just a ‘nice-to-have’ feature, it’s an algorithmic requirement,” Paul Ducklin, principal research scientist for Sophos, told Threatpost. “In internet standards language, it’s a MUST, not a SHOULD. That fresh-every-time randomness (12 bytes’ worth at least for the AES-GCM cipher mode) is known as a ‘nonce,’ short for Number Used Once – a jargon word that cryptographic programmers should treat as an *command*, not merely as a noun.”

Unfortunately, Samsung didn’t use the numbers just once.

“Indeed, it allowed an app running outside the secure encryption hardware component not only to influence the nonces used inside it, but even to choose those nonces exactly, deliberately and malevolently, repeating them as often as the app’s creator wanted,” Ducklin continued.

The issue impacts a wide range of models, from the 2017 Galaxy S8 to 2021’s Galaxy S21.

There’s no excuse for any company to be so cavalier in its handling of something as important as encryption. For a company with Samsung’s experience and resources to so blatantly ignore basic security principles is almost criminal.

UK Will Require Tech Firms to Verify User Identity When Posting Online

UK Will Require Tech Firms to Verify User Identity When Posting Online

The UK is preparing to implement its Online Safety Bill, including provisions that will require tech firms to combat online trolls with ID verification.

The nature of the internet has often been at odds with societal good. By design, the internet was built around anonymity. In recent years, however, that anonymity has come under increasing scrutiny as online harassment and trolls have become a major issue. The issue has especially come into focus as anonymous accounts have been used to spread misinformation, often with far-reaching consequences.

The UK wants to address that issue by stripping away that anonymity and requiring tech companies to verify user identities, according to CNBC.

“Tech firms have a responsibility to stop anonymous trolls polluting their platforms,” U.K. Digital Minister Nadine Dorries said in a statement Friday.

“People will now have more control over who can contact them and be able to stop the tidal wave of hate served up to them by rogue algorithms.”

Needless to say, online platforms are not happy with the UK’s plans. Many online platforms, civil rights groups, and privacy advocates view anonymity as an important element to preserving people’s safety and privacy, especially against oppressive regimes.

The Online Safety Bill doesn’t specify how tech companies should implement ID verification, leaving them leeway to find the method that best fits. Some of the potential options include facial recognition, two-factor authentication, or verification with some form of government ID.

Amazon Music Set to Pass Pandora For Number Two Spot

Amazon Music is set to pass Pandora as the second-largest music app, leaving only Spotify ahead of it.

Spotify may be the market leader by a relatively wide margin, but the battle for second-place is much closer. Pandora has been in that position for some time, but Axios reports that Amazon Music will surpass it in 2022, with 53 million people expected to tune in at least once a month. In contrast, 49 million people are expected to listen to Pandora at least once a month in 2022.

Despite its market dominance, Spotify has recently found itself mired in controversy over its support of Joe Rogan. As a result, multiple artists have pulled their music catalogs from the platform, leaving it in a more vulnerable position than it has been in years.

Only time will tell if Amazon Music, Pandora, or Apple Music will be able to take advantage of Spotify’s predicament and make some major headway in the market.

5 Resources Every Startup Needs For A Great Start

The initial phase is always the most difficult and intimidating for entrepreneurs who wish to pursue new and innovative ideas through startups in the United States. Statistics show that almost 90% of startups fail, and 10% of startups do not survive the initial year, failing to see any type of growth. This rightfully scares wide-eyed entrepreneurs who want to establish themselves in the market and solidify their name and brand.

Luckily, there are ways to ensure the best possible start, and that is to utilize some of the best and most useful resources available to entrepreneurs. A large variety of resources can help entrepreneurs and startups learn new strategies and techniques and these resources can aid in the formation and the handling of finances, transactions, and web development.

This article will break down some of the most notable resources that entrepreneurs can use to get a head-start in the market so that their startup begins on the right foot for a seamless and successful business journey.

Sufficient Money To Launch The Business

While it might seem obvious that initial funds and capital are very important for the establishment of a business, many entrepreneurs dive headfirst into business ventures with some funds, but not enough to carry them across a longer period of time.

Entrepreneurs need to carefully plan their finances and take the long game into account. This is why starting businesses in states such as Virginia or Texas is beneficial, as these states have adequate venture capital and investment plans to fund small startups that have much potential. By having the right backing and funds, startups will be on their way to a good start.

Limited liability Company (LLC) Formation Service

If entrepreneurs are planning on creating a startup through an LLC, then it is beneficial to hire a professional formation service to get the job done adequately and thoroughly. While the LLC establishment process is fairly simple, hiring the best LLC companies to get the job done can ensure that entrepreneurs will have peace of mind knowing that all the bases are covered.

Having a company handle the logistics of the regulations and rules behind establishment ensures that a startup will have a legal and formal start, meaning that entrepreneurs can begin to operate almost immediately. Startups will not run into any trouble down the line as the formation services will get everything done when it comes to filing documents and articles and getting the best-registered agents on board.

Free Online Business Websites

Free online business websites are very useful for entrepreneurs who still need to learn the different tricks of the trade. These free websites can offer lessons and tutorials that detail how entrepreneurs should market and what steps they should take when beginning a business.

It is never too late to learn for entrepreneurs, and they can do so for free utilizing these informative websites that can teach new business owners how to maintain their current startup. Learning new and important lessons will ensure a startup begins in the best possible manner.

Finance management Tools

To have a good start, every small business needs to look into some sort of software or application that can handle the accounting side of the business. By having a program or allocation, finances will be neatly organized and startups will not be lost in the flood when it comes to managing their accounts.

Website Creator

In this digital day and age, startups can benefit a lot from having a great quality website that can display important information relating to social media links, news updates and even online stores where consumers can buy from the comfort of their home. Small businesses can have a great start if they have a well designed website to promote their business.

Takeaway

With these valuable resources, entrepreneurs can be well equipped to tackle the market and get their small business up and running on the best possible note. Utilizing these key resources is vital during the establishment process of the business and startups can greatly benefit from these small additions.

Google Relaxing Vaccine and Mask Requirements

Google is making major changes to its policies, relaxing its vaccine and mask requirements, as well as reinstating many office-based perks.

Like many companies, Google has struggled to strike a balance between bringing people back to the office and keeping them safe. The company signaled in July 2021 that it would require vaccination for employees returning to the office. A few months later, in December, it said employees who refused to get vaccinated would be fired.

The company is now changing its policies, according to CNBC, and will no longer require vaccination. In addition, Google is dropping its mask and social distancing requirement, and is relaxing its testing requirements as well. The news was shared with employees via an email from David Radcliffe, VP, Real Estate and Workplace Services.

The company is also reinstating some of the perks it is well-known for, such as massage services, fitness centers, and the various “informal space,” including game rooms, lounges, music rooms, and more.

“We’re at the beginning of a journey, so the office experience will feel pretty similar to what it was like pre-Covid,” Radcliffe said. “We’re designing and piloting options to support new ways of working together and we’ll gather insights, data and feedback to help us learn as we go.”

According to CNBC, the change is the result of the current state of the pandemic, which appears to be waning significantly, for the first time since the onset.

FAA: Boeing 737 Fleet Still Susceptible to 5G Interference

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned the existing fleet of Boeing 737s are still susceptible to 5G interference.

Verizon and AT&T spent billions buying C-band spectrum for their 5G networks at a recent FCC auction, only to have the FAA and airline industry raise concerns about 5G interference. Because C-band spectrum is so close to the spectrum aircraft altimeters use, there were concerns 5G could interfere with those altimeters, leading to significant dangers during flights, and especially when taking off and landing.

Despite eventually coming to terms that allowed Verizon and AT&T to continue with their deployment, the FAA has issued an Airworthiness Directive (AD), indicating that Boeing 737s are still particularly susceptible to interference.

This AD was prompted by a determination that radio altimeters cannot be relied upon to perform their intended function if they experience interference from wireless broadband operations in the 3.7-3.98 GHz frequency band (5G C-Band), and a recent determination that, during approach, landings, and go-arounds, as a result of this interference, certain airplane systems may not properly function, resulting in increased flightcrew workload while on approach with the flight director, autothrottle, or autopilot engaged, which could result in reduced ability of the flightcrew to maintain safe flight and landing of the airplane.

It’s currently unclear what, if any, mitigation efforts may be taken.

GM Kills Off Marketplace

GM has announced it has killed off Marketplace, one of its more innovative convenience features.

Marketplace was an app that allowed GM owners to purchase gas, food, drinks, and more from their in-vehicle infotainment systems. The company first unveiled the product in 2017, and it was a comprehensive way for drivers to access various roadside services. In addition to fuel, food, and drinks, drivers could make hotel reservations, as well as order curbside pickup. Marketplace was also touted as a way for businesses to more easily engage with drivers and potential customers.

Despite its innovative features, GM is killing off Marketplace, according to CNBC.

“We routinely evaluate our services to ensure they provide the best experience for our members. In this spirit, we have decided to discontinue our Marketplace services,” GM said in an email to vehicle owners.

It seems low adoption rate is to blame for the feature’s untimely demise, with one engineer saying activation was only in the “thousands.”

The US Government Still Uses Outdated Tech to Track Business Tax

WebProNews
The US Government Still Uses Outdated Tech to Track Business Tax

Tax season is now, and the people of the United States have until 18 April to complete their paperwork in order to avoid penalties and late fees. The United States Department of Justice has issued a communique stating that “U.S. taxpayers are subject to tax on worldwide income from all sources and must report all taxable income and pay taxes according to the Internal Revenue Code. Taxpayers found to be committing fraud may be subject to penalties including payment of taxes owed plus interest, fines, and jail time.”

The United States Treasury Department uses a decades-old programming language called assembly language code. The coding is used for the maintenance of Individual Master Files, the data source for taxes, refunds, and other updates– the technology is being used to track business taxes as well.

Updating Systems Technology

Tax data for individual business income is tracked and recorded in the Treasury’s Business Master File, which is written in assembly language code—while operating on an IBM mainframe, a large computer that most likely has less power than most smartphones today. According to report notes, the code is both difficult to write and maintain.

The United States Government Accountability office addressed the issue, stating that the IRS relies heavily on information technology for the processing of tax returns, collecting taxes, distributing tax refunds, and carrying out numerous other services for taxpayers. In the 2020 fiscal year, the IRS spent approximately $2.8 billion to maintain and improve its IT systems. The government also said that the IRS had taken steps to modernize IT systems to improve both internal processes and services to taxpayers.

The IRS has reported that taxpayers should expect a more modern system that would “eventually provide real-time digital taxpayer interactions and rapid access to data for enhanced customer service. A 2030 retirement for the IMF means that taxpayers will have to wait until then to fully reap the benefits of a modern system, including faster service from the IRS.”

Business Taxation in the United States

The United States imposes a tax on the earnings of US resident businesses at a rate of 21 percent. A number that was reduced from 35 percent by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. However, corporate income tax rose by $230.2 billion in the 2019 fiscal year, accounting for 6.6 percent of all federal revenue, a decrease from 9 percent in 2017.However, in the case of an LLC, the taxation will defer. This is due to the business structure benefiting from pass-through taxation– meaning that there is no business taxation, and members will therefore only be taxed on their individual income. Since individual income tax is determined by each state, the amount of tax payable- if any- will depend on the location of incorporation. In California, for instance, income tax rates can range from 1% to 12.3%. The LLC California cost is also lower than forming a corporation in the state.

Other costs that entrepreneurs should also pay attention to are:

●  Filing fees- Charge of filing Articles of Organization with the Secretary of State.

●  Statement of Information Fee- Cost of a biennial report with the Secretary of State.

●  Annual Taxation- Some states require all LLCs that do business in the state to pay an annual tax.

●  Initial Report Fee- Business owners may have to file an initial report with the Secretary of State, usually within 90 days from the date of registration.

●  Registered Agent Fee– Registered agents are required for all businesses in the U.S that have filed with the state.

Final Thoughts

With the surge of new businesses and tax season in full swing, the U.S government has its hands full. While the outdated technology might be functional and gets the job done, there needs to be an upgrade in order to keep up with the constant advancements in technology which will ideally streamline the filing processes. This will prove beneficial to both taxpayers and the government.

Zoom Debuts Zoom Contact Center

Less than five months after calling off its attempt to purchase contact center provider Five9, Zoom has debuted its own Zoom Contact Center.

Zoom announced in July 2021 that it was purchasing Five9 for nearly $15 billion in an effort to break into the contact center market. Zoom has always had its roots in the business and enterprise market before becoming a household name as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the deal was seen as a way to refocus on those roots. That deal came up short, however, coming under a US national security review, and ultimately being abandoned in September 2021.

The company has continued on with its own plans, unveiling Zoom Contact Center. According to Zoom, what sets apart its new service is a focus on video, as opposed to primarily audio.

“Unlike most contact center technologies that are only optimized for voice, Zoom Contact Center is the first omnichannel contact center solution that is optimized for video and intentionally supports a robust suite of channels, such as voice and video (with SMS and webchat in beta for upcoming launch),” writes Sydney Sloan, Head of Product Marketing.

The new product can be used as a standalone customer solution, or integrated with existing websites and applications. In addition, the solution is designed to be scalable, with customers only paying for the support they need.

Companies are already reaping benefits from the new platform.

With Zoom Contact Center, our contact center supervisors have the ability to organize service representatives based on skills, so when a member reaches out, we can now route their inquiries directly to experts that are equipped to handle their unique needs. A process that would previously require multiple service representatives can now be accelerated and streamlined into a single conversation. We’ve seen our overall call time and pick-up time improve significantly as we provide more efficient resolution and a better experience for our members.

Chris Neal, Senior Vice President Operations, First Federal Credit Union

Zoom Contact Center is already available in the US and Canada, with international support planned for later in 2022.

Microsoft Taking Platform Agnostic Approach to Cloud Security

Microsoft Taking Platform Agnostic Approach to Cloud Security

Microsoft has signaled it wants to provide security for cloud-based companies in general, regardless of whether they use Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.

Microsoft is a far different company under Satya Nadella than it was under Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Instead of ruthlessly protecting and pushing its own operating systems and platforms, the company has shifted to the cloud, with a focus on providing the best applications and services on a variety of systems and platforms.

The company is now extending that philosophy to cloud security, with its latest update to Microsoft Defender for Cloud. Formerly known as Azure Defender, the company changed its name to better reflect its emphasis on securing multicloud environments. Microsoft has also added support for Google Cloud, roughly three months after adding support for AWS. In both cases, the company used open programming APIs to integrate Microsoft Defender with its rivals’ platforms.

“Today most of our customers have AWS and they have Azure and they have Google Cloud and they have different workloads around and then they have security solutions which are native to each of these,” Vasu Jakkal, CVP Microsoft Security, Compliance, Identity & Privacy told Bloomberg in an interview. “Think about the security practitioners sitting in a Security Operations Center looking at these alerts in this pane of glass — they’re dealing with three if not more.”

This is not the first time Microsoft has set itself apart from its rivals. In early February, the company released its Open App Store Principles, in which it committed to behavior that is almost diametrically opposite from the manner in which Apple and Google run their app stores.

For those who remember Microsoft of the ’90s and early 2000s, this open, enlightened Microsoft is a refreshing change, and increasingly serves as an example for the rest of the industry. Hopefully more companies will take note and imitate it.

Google Abandoned the Pixel 3 For No Good Reason

WebProNews
Google Abandoned the Pixel 3 For No Good Reason

Some users are not happy with Google’s decision to stop supporting the Pixel 3, and there appears to be no technical reason for the decision.

Google has been working to build support for its line of smartphones, with the recently released Pixel 6 and 6 Pro sporting the company’s Tensor chip. One of the benefits Google touted about the Tensor was the five years of security updates and support the company would provide, something very uncommon in the Android world.

Earlier versions of the Pixel, however, still run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon line of processors, and Google only ever committed to three years of updates for those devices. With Android 12, the 2018 flagship Pixel 3 and 3 XL reached the end of their life, and did not receive the update.

According to Ryne Hager, over at Android Police, there’s no technical reason why Google needed to abandon the Pixel 3, and it appears the company simply decided it had met its minimum obligation and didn’t want to extend it.

“With these options for updates available, there’s only one conclusion to draw: Google just doesn’t want to keep updating the Pixel 3,” writes Hager. “That three-year promise has been satisfied, and it’s not making more money from Pixel 3 customers. Why go above and beyond?”

Google went all-out with the Pixel 6 in an effort to grab more market share. Perhaps the company would also do well to listen to the feedback it’s receiving about the Pixel 3, and compare its policies to Apple’s. Apple recently released iOS 15, including support for devices as old as the iPhone 6S from 2015.

If Google really wants to be a serious hardware player, it needs to appreciate that customers remember when companies go above and beyond, as Apple has done in its support for older models, instead of doing the bare minimum to make a buck and move on.

US Copyright Office Rejects Copyright for AI-Created Art

US Copyright Office Rejects Copyright for AI-Created Art

The US Copyright Office has upheld its previous decision, ruling that AI can’t receive a copyright for art it creates.

The copyright application was filed by Steven Thaler on behalf of his “Creativity Machine.” Thaler has been on a crusade to get AI recognized as inventors and artists. In September 2021, a US judge denied his attempt to file a patent on behalf of an AI “inventor.”

Similarly, in November 2018, Thaler had filed a copyright for a piece of artwork created by his AI algorithm. In August 2019, the US Copyright Office denied his application, which he appealed. The Copyright Office has now considered the appeal and upheld its original ruling.

After reviewing the Work in light of the points raised in the First Request, the Office reevaluated the claims and again concluded that the Work “lacked the required human authorship necessary to sustain a claim in copyright,” because Thaler had “provided no evidence on sufficient creative input or intervention by a human author in the Work.”

The Copyright Office’s decision is a blow to Thaler and proponents of AI.

Outage Impacting Slack, AWS, Github, Walmart, and Others

What appears to be a major outage is impacting a number of high-profile sites, including Slack, AWS, Github, Walmart, and others.

According to Downdetector.com, some of the internet’s largest sites and platforms are experiencing a spike in outage reports. The reports started mid-morning on Tuesday.

At this time, it’s unclear what has caused the outage, although AWS’ inclusion in the list makes it at least possible that it is the culprit, since the platform powers so many other sites.

Slack updated its Status page to let users know it was aware of the issue, but still not sure of the cause.

Some customers are unable to load Slack. We’re still actively investigating this issue, but we don’t have any new information to share at this time. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we have an update.

We will update as more details become available.

How To Enhance the Virtual Conference Experience

WebProNews
How To Enhance the Virtual Conference Experience

Ever since the pandemic began, there has been a rapid acceleration toward virtual conferences. They are easy to host, accessible for anyone, and the associated costs are much better than using a physical space. What’s more, a virtual conference can go on regardless of future quarantines or public gathering restrictions.

While it’s becoming commonplace to host virtual conferences, though, that doesn’t mean that every event is the same. On the contrary, as is the case with physical conferences, a virtual event can consist of a variety of good and bad experiences.

If you want your next virtual conference to fall on the “good” side of the leger, here are a few tips to help you enhance the experience.

Use Tech to Take Your Sound to the Next Level

Before you make any strategic adjustments to your virtual conferences, it’s important to start on the IT side of things. Just because you’ve paid for a conference tool doesn’t mean you instantly have all of your technological elements sorted out.

If quality is a concern, you can invest in technology that is designed to take your event to the next level. A good example of this is the Dolby.io spatial audio feature.

Spatial audio is designed to provide a natural feel to the conversation within a virtual meeting space. It separates overlapping voices and makes it sound as if each person is speaking from different areas of a virtual “room” with position-based listening.

This overcomes cross-talking when multiple people speak simultaneously. Rather than hearing a jumble of voices, individuals can hear each person clearly. This doesn’t just make hearing easier. It provides a natural atmosphere and can reduce things like listener fatigue and disengagement.

Improve Your Video Experience

Along with audio, you want to consider how your viewers are seeing each speaker. Watching someone speak down into their low-quality laptop camera for two hours can get boring quickly.

Instead, look for tech tools that allow you to manipulate the visuals for your event. A great example of this is Zoom’s solution for the condition named after its own software: “Zoom fatigue.”

The condition was coined after the pandemic led to endless hours spent on dull video calls. In response to this ongoing issue, Zoom developed Immersive View. This is a video format that allows you to bring all of the attendees of a meeting or webinar into a single virtual “view.”

As is the case with Dolby.io’s Spatial Audio, Immersive View brings a more natural, engaging aspect to a meeting.

Think Bigger Than Individual Webinars

A virtual conference should never be a disconnected string of webinars with nothing in between. That is one of the best ways to induce disinterest in a hurry. Instead, make sure to think about the bigger picture with each webinar that you host.

This starts with your theme. A guest speaker is great. So is some insightful advice from a team member. Having your CEO open up the event with a presentation is great. But if these pieces aren’t focused on a similar theme, they’ll feel disjointed and uninspiring. Make sure each event has a clear theme.

In addition, you can use your tech tools to help tie things together. For instance, encourage people to log in early to each webinar. Then, have an MC or even the speaker for that session oversee some two-way conversations with the attendees. This can help warm everyone up and get them interested in the topic of conversation.

Use Time and Humor

When Forbes asked its Forbes Business Council members to share some strategies to spice up a video conference, it’s no surprise that the second recommendation was to start with some fun. In addition, even when they weren’t focused on humor, multiple recommendations incorporated an element of entertainment.

The goal, of course, is to lighten the mood and encourage attendees to invest in the experience. This could come through having someone’s child give an opening statement or showing off each attendees’ pet. There are plenty of ways to infuse humor to bring a splash of fun to an oft-mundane communication medium.

In addition to the fun, make sure to keep each session concise and to the point. Don’t give speakers lavish amounts of time to drone on or get overly detailed. That’s difficult enough in a live setting. Doing it with virtual listeners guarantees that they’ll check out before long.

Timing can make or break your event. Remember that conciseness is your friend in the virtual world.

Encourage Engagement

We already touched on this in the earlier point regarding letting people interact. However, you can (and should) let this camaraderie spill over into sessions whenever possible, too.

Obviously, if you have a guest speaker mid-slide in a serious lecture, you don’t want people interrupting. But there are many other occasions where you can naturally encourage engagement.

Chat bars allow people to exchange thoughts and commentary during a live presentation. Call and response also works well. If you have a question, don’t make it rhetorical. Don’t answer yourself, either. Ask someone else to raise their hand, unmute their channel, and answer for you.

If you want your next event to be a success, remember that you need to invest in enhancing the experience. Improve your sound and audio options. Weave your webinars together and give time for people to engage with one another.

Little improvements like these can help turn a virtual event into a valuable asset for your business that offers an experience that will have people coming back time after time.

David Crosby Calls Spotify ‘Scummy People’ As Music Pulled

David Crosby Calls Spotify ‘Scummy People’ As Music Pulled

Spotify’s troubles continue to mount with music legend David Crosby calling the people who work there “scummy people.”

Spotify found itself in hot water over its relationship with Joe Rogan. Rogan’s show has been criticized repeatedly for spreading misinformation about the COVID pandemic, as well as for language Rogan himself has used over the years.

Neil Young became one of the biggest names to call the platform out and pull his entire catalog of music, but Crosby is being even more blunt, saying he doesn’t believe the company will suddenly develop morals.

“I don’t see them growing a conscience,” Crosby told Stereogum. “I don’t believe there are good people working there. If they were good people, they wouldn’t work there. They’re not going to suddenly grow some balls and stand against the trend. They’re not going to feel the need to do the right thing. They’re going to keep on collecting money and being shitty to the world. That’s what we have to deal with. “

Crosby had already sold his catalog of music to Irving Azoff, but Azoff was willing to accomodate him when Crosby told him he wanted his music off the platform.

“Of course I had to ask Irving [Azoff],” Crosby continued. “He holds my publishing. The amazing and really wonderful thing is both [Azoff’s company] Iconic and BMG went along with it. They said, ‘If that’s what you feel you have to do, we’ll go along with it.’ I was stunned. That is not normal corporate behavior. Normally they go for the dollar and the quickest possible answer. They don’t go for that, they don’t do that. They don’t support a moral stand.”

So far, Spotify has continued to stand by Rogan. But as the the losses mount, one can’t help but wonder if the company will eventually cut him loose.

Salesforce Faces Employee Backlash Over NFT Plans

Salesforce employees are pushing back against the company’s plan to create an NFT platform.

Salesforce announced in early February that it was working to develop its own NFT platform and NFT Cloud. Co-CEOs Marc Benioff and Bret Taylor told employees at an online event. NFTs have become increasingly popular, with some fetching millions of dollars.

It seems Salesforce employees are not impressed with the plans, with hundreds of them signing an open letter of protest, according to Thompson Reuters Foundation News. The employees took multiple issues with the company’s plans, including the environmental impact of NFTs and their being “unregulated, highly speculative financial assets.”

The environmental concerns are becoming a common refrain of critics of blockchain-based tech. Mozilla was forced to abandon plans to accept cryptocurrency donations over crypto’s environmental impact, and Wikipedia is under similar pressure.

It remains to be seen if Salesforce will abandon its plans, or merely alter them to address employee concerns.

Google Will Pay Houston, Iowa, and North Carolina Workers Less

Google Will Pay Houston, Iowa, and North Carolina Workers Less

Google has announced plans to pay workers in Houston, TX, Iowa, and North Carolina less, a move that has lead to substantial backlash.

Google ruffled features by announcing a change in the compensation status for the Research Triangle area in North Carolina, as well as Houston, TX, and Des Moines, IA. According to the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU), the salary band was lowered from “National” to “Discount.

The company’s decision comes at a time when many Google employees are relocating to these areas, and will result in 25% less pay than the National rate. The areas in question include higher concentrations of minorities, groups Google is actively courting in its attempts to diversify. As the AWU points out, if Google is successful in expanding its recruitment of minorities, “the data will tell the story that Google is paying minorities less.”

The AWU is calling on Google to abandon its plans and reclassify the areas to match the National salary band. The union also wants Google to be more transparent about any future pay decisions.

Why Tech Companies are Moving to Better Taxing States

WebProNews
Why Tech Companies are Moving to Better Taxing States

A study has found that significant corporate income tax cuts result in an increase in corporate innovation, particularly amid financially constrained institutions. Another study found that a lower corporate tax rate actually increased job creation and firm entry—it also concluded that the firms that had responded to the tax cut have a tendency to be larger, showed increased productivity, and are more likely to survive after three years.

There is substantial evidence that indicates that corporate tax increases cause worse economic outcomes at a state level. With thousands of firms still in survival mode, it seems imprudent for financial sustainability to raise corporate taxes at a state or federal level. In the U.S., it is easier for tech businesses to change states than it is to leave the country since there are states that provide more attractive tax incentives than others.

Best States for Business Tax Climate

Texas– The state has no income tax, it does not impose any tax on estates, and its inheritance tax has been repealed since 2015.

Wyoming– The state of Wyoming does not impose any individual income tax, and it also does not levy a corporate income tax or a gross receipts tax.

South Dakota– South Dakota has zero individual income tax and does not levy any corporate income tax or gross receipts tax.

Alaska– Alaska is another great option for tech companies since it levies no individual income tax or state-level sales tax.

Florida– The sunshine state imposes no individual income tax, and it also has a low unemployment insurance tax.

Montana– The state’s constitution limits its sales tax to 4%.

New Hampshire– The state of New Hampshire has no state-level sales tax.

Nevada– The silver state has no corporate, franchise, or individual income tax.

Tennessee– The state law imposes zero individual income tax. A state sales tax of just 7% is the fundamental source of revenue.

Indiana – The state ranks among the best states for property tax rates.

For entrepreneurs that are looking for a state to incorporate their new tech startup, this website breaks down the state laws and provides the required resources to help business owners make better and more informed decisions.

How to Change to a Better Taxing State

As a corporation expands and develops, it is often a necessity to consider expanding into additional locations or, at times, having to relocate altogether. A company’s home base is traditionally the state that the business first incorporated in. The business is also considered a citizen of that state.    Entrepreneurs have the options of:

Changing the state of incorporation without reincorporating- Depending on the state, foreign corporations may be able to change their state of incorporation to a different state. If the law allows this, the foreign corporation does not have to shut down and reform as a new business in the new state—allowing it to maintain its current structure and form.

Dissolving to reincorporate- The majority of U.S states require a corporation to file the appropriate dissolution documents when it shuts down before reincorporating in a new host state. The company will be required to pay out final paychecks, notify creditors, and file for its outstanding tax returns.

Conducting business in a foreign state- If a business wants to expand into other states, it can register with the necessary states as a foreign corporation—this allows for business operations within each state it registers with. This process eliminates the need for having to change the state of incorporation.

Final Thoughts

The U.S government advises entrepreneurs that “As a business owner, it’s important to understand your federal, state, and local tax requirements. This will help you file your taxes accurately and make payments on time. The business structure you choose when starting a business will determine what taxes you’ll pay and how you pay them.”

Since state tax laws differ, it is equally as important to choose the correct state at the onset since the process of relocating is not simple and may require the entire business to be dissolved before it can open up in a new state.

More Surveillance Than China — Clearview AI’s Business Plan

Few companies would proudly tout their business plan as offering more comprehensive surveillance than China, but that’s exactly what Clearview AI is doing.

Clearview AI gained fame and notoriety for scraping images from popular websites and social media platforms in an effort to build a massive database of photos for facial recognition — and in violation of those platforms’ terms. The company claimed to only provide its software to law enforcement and government agencies, but reports indicate it was far more loose than it admitted, in terms of who had access to its platform. In addition, the company was found to be working with various authoritarian regimes.

As if the company couldn’t become anymore controversial, The Washington Post reports the company is proudly calling its surveillance platform more comprehensive than similar systems in China, thanks to the “public source metadata” and “social linkage” information the company bases its product on.

Clearview is also working to establish itself as the leader in the field, at a time when the industry leaders are taking a more responsible, measured approach to facial recognition. Clearview, in contrast, sees Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM’s cautious approach as a market opportunity, as it seeks to gain investment for a massive expansion effort.

What’s more, accord to The Post, the company is sending out conflicting messages about its plans. Until now, Clearview has promised it will only sell to law enforcement and government agencies. In the presentation material view by The Post, however, government contracts are shown as only making up a small portion of the company’s potential market. The presentation material discusses building out the company’s personnel, specifically to target the financial and commercial market. Even more alarming, Clearview wants to build a “developer ecosystem” to help other companies use its database in their own products.

Jack Poulson, a former Google research scientist and current head of research advocacy group Tech Inquiry, asked if there was anything “they wouldn’t sell this mass surveillance for? If they’re selling it for just regular commercial uses, that’s just mass surveillance writ large. It’s not targeted toward the most extreme cases, as they’ve pledged in the past.”

Clearview’s unethical behavior and irresponsible approach to privacy and data security, not to mention the legal implications of its data collection, have already led to multiple lawsuits, investigations, and bans in some countries and jurisdictions.

Here’s to hoping more countries crack down on this bottom-feeder.

Shopify Evolving Into World’s First Retail Operating System

WebProNews
Shopify Evolving Into World’s First Retail Operating System

“Shopify is evolving into the world’s first retail operating system,” says Shopify COO Harley Finkelstein. “We think the future of retail is retail everywhere. A brand that’s going to be successful in 5, 10 or 15 years from now needs to sell across any platform and across any channel where they have customers. The idea is that it all feeds back in one centralized back-office, the retail operating system, which is Shopify.”

Harley Finkelstein, COO of Shopify, discusses how COVID has dramatically sped up the timeline for commerce moving online and has also moved Shopify closer to its goal of becoming the world’s first retail operating system:

Shopify Evolving Into World’s First Retail Operating System

Most people assume that Shopify is an ecommerce provider. We have more than a million stores on Shopify. If you were to aggregate our stores in the US we’d be the second-largest online retailer in America. Of course, we’re not a retailer but we’re a platform. But we now have these great economies of scale that we’re using to level the playing field for entrepreneurs and small businesses. That being said, what really Shopify is evolving into is the world’s first retail operating system.

What we’re trying to figure out is what do brands and entrepreneurs and retailers need, not just now but in the future? We think the future of retail is retail everywhere. A brand that’s going to be successful in 5, 10 or 15 years from now needs to sell across any platform and across any channel where they have customers. This idea of enabling Shopify merchants to very easily push their products to the Amazon Marketplace or the eBay marketplace or now the Walmart marketplace, that gives them access to a new set of consumers. The idea is that it all feeds back in one centralized back-office, the retail operating system, which is Shopify.

Then we’ve gone ahead and asked what else can we do for these merchants? Can we do capital? We’ve now given out about a billion dollars worth of cash advances and loans to small businesses. We’re doing fulfillment and we’re doing shipping. We’re increasing the scope and the relationship that we have with the million stores on Shopify. This is allowing them to become category leaders.

COVID Speeds Up The Ecommerce Revolution

From our view, it seems like the commerce world that would have existed in the year 2030 has really been pulled into the year 2020 (as a result of the COVID crisis). We’ve seen ecommerce as a percent of total retail go from 15 percent to 25 percent in the last three months. That’s the same growth rate that we’ve seen over the last 10 years. What really has emerged here is sort of this tale of two retail worlds. On one side you have these resilient retailers that are doing great, they’re pivoting, and they’re expanding their businesses. On the other side, you have these resistant retailers who have not made it. In many ways, it’s probably the most exciting time for retail in a very long time.

We talk a lot about these direct to consumer brands that are becoming category leaders. The Allbirds and the Gymsharks who started on Shopify when they were very small and have grown to become the incumbents in their industry. Every 25 seconds a brand new entrepreneur makes his or her (products) for sale on Shopify. We talk a lot about those new startups, those new DTC brands. But actually, what we’re also seeing on Shopify are companies like Lindt Chocolate or Heinz ketchup or Chipotle. They are signing up for Shopify and basically from like five days from contract to launch they are completely changing their businesses.

This resiliency isn’t simply in the hands of just the smallest of brands. Big companies are also beginning to think a lot more about how to stay resilient in this time. They’re moving well beyond ecommerce or thinking about offline commerce now. They’re thinking about how do they sell across social media? How do they sell across different marketplaces? So no, I don’t think it’s too late (to enter ecommerce) but I do think they have to rethink their strategies.

3 Digital Innovations to Help Your Startup

3 Digital Innovations to Help Your Startup

The United States government has been noted for encouraging entrepreneurship and for being focused on providing small businesses in the U.S with the tools and resources needed to grow and sustain themselves. The Biden-Harris Administration has even distributed over $400 billion in critical relief to more than six million small businesses in America.

The government states that 71 percent of small business owners “are optimistic about their own performance in 2022, up from 63 percent one year ago. The broader economic recovery – one of the fastest on record – has also helped spur a surge in entrepreneurship. Americans are applying to start new businesses at a record rate, up about 30 percent compared to before the pandemic.” The government has stated that they will be placing emphasis on:

● Connecting small businesses to the resources needed to grow and succeed.

● Expanding access to low-cost investments and loans.

● Providing universal broadband to help small businesses hire new employees and reach new customers

● Providing greater access to billions of dollars in federal contracts for small businesses.

The increased government support proves that now is the best time to start that new business that you have been thinking about; apart from federal resources, the internet is a treasure trove for digital innovations to help startups reach their potential.

3 Digital Business Tools to Help New Businesses

Registered Agent Services

United States law requires all businesses that have been filed with the state to have a registered business agent. What is a Registered Agent? A registered agent is an individual or even a business entity that will formally accept tax and legal documents on behalf of a business. A registered agent is also referred to as a resident agent or statutory agent.

The registered agent can be anyone of legal age that meets the state’s requirements; however, registered agent services are preferred since they provide a professional and knowledgeable expert that will handle any official communication and filings on behalf of the business. They provide entrepreneurs with:

●  Compliance with the Law

●  Peace of Mind

●  Flexibility

●  Privacy

There are a  variety of online businesses that provide entrepreneurs with this service; however, it is always recommended that business owners conduct proper research before they commit.

Business Name Generators

Thinking of the perfect business name is hard work; after all, it becomes the central focus of the brand and should therefore embody everything about it. However, it cannot be too complex because this will make it difficult to remember and search for– it also needs to be creative and catchy to leave a lasting impression. This is a lot of pressure to put on just a few words; however, it could make or break a business.

This is why online name generators are so handy. Not only do they provide businesses with a variety of options, but they also streamline the process so that entrepreneurs can move onto the next phase of getting their business up and running. Name generators work by utilizing a set of keywords that are provided by the user; they then use these words to generate a set of industry or location-specific options (not all tools provide this option). Entrepreneurs can then pick the best name and go about the rest of the registration process.

Cloud Storage

The cloud is a digital storage solution that has dramatically changed the way companies store and access their data. Cloud solutions allow companies to keep data and applications on secure, remote servers. This allows for swift scalability, rapid deployment of new solutions, and more efficient information management. Popular options include Google Drive, OneDrive, and DropBox, which are ideal for the current mobile workforce. It also works as the perfect solution for new startups that do not have the space or funding for a storage warehouse.

It also ensures that files are kept the same in the event of a disaster, and they can be easily accessed on command. It also allows businesses to keep track of who has access to their documents.

Final Thoughts

Advancements in technology have helped businesses reach new heights at rapid speeds; they streamline the process by consolidating and simplifying business operations so that owners have more time, resources, and budget to invest in growing and developing their brands.
