IBM is continuing its breakneck pace of acquiring companies, with Turbonomic the latest acquisition.

IBM is working to reinvent itself as a hybrid cloud provider, with plans to spin off its legacy business. To aid in that endeavor, the company has been snapping up startups left and right to help it round out its portfolio of services and abilities.

The latest acquisition is Turbonomic, “an Application Resource Management (ARM) and Network Performance Management (NPM) software provider.” The company specializes in using AI to help automate ARM.

The acquisition of Turbonomic builds on the company’s purchase of Instanta and will position it to be the only company able to offer the entire range AI-powered automation capabilities.

“IBM continues to reshape its future as a hybrid cloud and AI company,” said Rob Thomas, Senior Vice President, IBM Cloud and Data Platform. “The Turbonomic acquisition is yet another example of our commitment to making the most impactful investments to advance this strategy and ensure customers find the most innovative ways to fuel their digital transformations.”

Graduations, weddings, becoming a parent, becoming a grandparent, promotions, anniversaries, vacations, birthdays, a night on the town, and a quiet dinner date at home. What do all of these things have in common?  They all involve the consumption of alcohol.  No matter the occasion, there’s always a reason to have a drink, and since the COVID pandemic, we’re consuming even more alcohol than before.  Even though we could no longer meet for drinks at a bar, overall alcohol consumption actually grew by 14% during quarantine, with the top growth demographics being among women (17%) and millennials & Gen X’ers (19%).  Forty-four percent of Americans began buying their alcohol online which caused a 243% spike in online alcohol sales.  Instacart alcohol orders also grew by 75%. And the emergence of ready-to-drink cocktails are here to serve.

The pandemic also naturally caused a spike in home bartending, and now we have new Quarantinis to add to our mixed drink repertoire.  Some of these drinks include the Kumquarantini; a mix of rye whiskey, kumquat syrup, lemon juice, saffron liquor, and egg whites.  Or if you want to embrace your inner health nut while consuming your alcoholic beverage, you might enjoy the Kombucha Quarantini, which includes a blend of gin, kombucha, and blackberries.  We also can’t forget this throwback to the great toilet paper shortage of 2020; the Charmin Quarantini, with vodka, cointreau, lime juice, simple syrup, cranberry liqueur, and toilet water (just kidding.) 

No matter what’s going on in the world, alcohol has been there to help us cope and help us celebrate.  Cocktails have played a big role in human history.  Gin & Tonic (gin, tonic, and lemon or lime) was popularized by the Brits in the 19th century as a health tonic many traveled to India and warmer climates.   Maraschino Cherries became popular in the early 1900’s after a New York Times post in 1910 reported on a young woman who had ordered dozens of Manhattans at a fashionable hotel.  Upon investigation it was discovered that the drinks were still untouched, but all the cherries were gone.  By 1915, the cherries were popping up in drinks and ice creams all over the country.  

Another interesting bit of cocktail history is that the Spanish flu of 1918, much like the COVID pandemic, also produced it’s handful of cocktails including the Corpse Reviver (gin, cointreau, Lillet Blonde, lemon juice, and Absinthe); the Penicillin Cocktail (Scotch whisky, lemon juice, honey syrup, ginger, and Islay single malt Scotch); and the Medicina Latina (Mezcal, honey ginger syrup, and lime juice.) 

The Mai Tai was created by Victor J. Bergeron, or “Trader Vic”, in 1944.  It included rum with lime, orgeat, orange curacao, and simple syrup.  However, in 1954, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel began adding pineapple and orange juice to sweeten the cocktail and this new recipe quickly became the standard.  

And who could forget the Pina Colada?  Created by Ramon “Monchito” Marrero in 1954, this fruity drink includes rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice.  In 1978 the Pina Colada was named the official drink of Puerto Rico.  

Although classic drink mixing still reigns supreme, the 2020 pandemic brought a huge boost in the sale of ready-to-drink cocktails.  In fact, sales of these quick drinks rose by 43%.  By 2024, ready-to-drink cocktails are expected to make up 20% of alcohol e-commerce.  

Someday soon, we may all be headed back to bars and restaurants, but with everyone becoming a bartender at home since COVID, the invention of ready-to-drink cocktails might just be something to celebrate.  We’ll drink to that!

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption has a problem keeping people long-term, as 20% of California EV owners switch back as a result of inconvenience.

EV adoption is one of the main thrusts many governments and companies are promoting as a way to slow greenhouse gases and fight climate change. Many automakers have already committed to transitioning their entires lineups to hybrid or fully electric vehicles within the next decade.

Unfortunately, a large portion of EV owners ultimately end up going back to gasoline vehicles because of the inconvenience surrounding charging. A study by Nature Energy, regarding plug-in electric vehicles (PEV), found that “PEV discontinuance in California occurs at a rate of 20% for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle owners and 18% for battery electric vehicle owners.”

Much of the issues stemmed from issues “related to dissatisfaction with the convenience of charging, having other vehicles in the household that are less efficient, not having level 2 (240-volt) charging at home, having fewer household vehicles and not being male.”

The low-voltage of outlets, in particular, are a major issue, with some users reporting a mere few miles range on an hour’s charge.

Nature Energy’s study illustrates the importance of continued development in battery technology that provides faster charging and higher capacities.

Roku has officially lost the YouTube TV app, after previously warning its customers of the possibility.

Roku warned customers earlier this week they could lose access to YouTube TV due to a contract dispute. Unlike many contract disputes, money was not the issue. Instead, Google was more interested in customer data than more money.

“We are disappointed that Google has allowed our agreement for the distribution of YouTube TV to expire,” a Roku spokesperson told WebProNews. “Roku has not asked for one dollar of additional financial consideration from Google to renew YouTube TV.”

Much of the issue hinged around Google’s data practices, with Roku endeavoring to protect its customers from the search giant.

“We have only asked Google for four simple commitments,” the spokesperson continued. “First, not to manipulate consumer search results. Second, not to require access to data not available to anyone else. Third, not to leverage their YouTube monopoly to force Roku to accept hardware requirements that would increase consumer costs. Fourth, not to act in a discriminatory and anticompetitive manner against Roku.”

Given the scrutiny Google is already under, playing hardball with Roku is not a good look for the company, and may create further problems down the road.

Ford, BMW and Honda are all experiencing major production issues as a result of the global semiconductor shortage.

The global pandemic sparked a semiconductor shortage as a result of production issues resulting from lockdowns. In addition, the move toward remote work has caused tablets and computers to see their highest demand in some time.

The auto industry has been one of the hardest hit, with automakers across the spectrum experiencing production delays as a result of the chip shortage. According to Bloomberg, multiple automakers have signaled trouble, all within a 12-hour timeframe.

Honda plans to halt production at three of its factories in Japan. BMW will cut back production in plants in both Germany and England. Meanwhile, Ford has warned its earnings for the year will suffer as a result of the chip shortage.

Chipmakers the world over are working to address the crisis. Intel is even working with automotive chipmakers to bring its manufacturing abilities to bear. In spite of that, expects believe the semiconductor challenge will last at least a couple of years.

Verizon is looking to sell Yahoo and AOL assets, as it pivots away from the digital media business it spent billions to enter.

Verizon bought Yahoo and AOL for a combined $9 billion, in an effort to diversify beyond its core business. The company saw its phone subscribers as a way to drive growth to digital media properties, and ultimately challenge the likes of Facebook and Google for digital media and advertising.

The company’s plans have been far from successful, and it is now looking to sell off its digital media assets, including both Yahoo and AOL, according to The Wall Street Journal. The decision follows a $4.5 billion write down of its digital media business in 2018, the sale of Tumblr in 2019 and the sale of HuffPost to BuzzFeed in November of last year.

Verizon has already involved Apollo Global Management, Inc. in the deal, one that some believe could be worth as much as $5 billion. Given the challenges Verizon faces moving forward with its 5G rollout, and the vast sum of money it recently spent to acquire more spectrum, $5 billion could be far more helpful in its core business.

Google executives may be eager to return to the office, but remote work is already saving the company $1 billion a year.

In a blog post in March, Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the company’s commitment to in-person collaboration.

Coming together in person to collaborate and build community is core to Google’s culture, and it will be an important part of our future.

Despite the company’s preference for in-person collaboration, remote work has had very tangible benefits for Google. According to Bloomberg, Google’s parent Alphabet saved $268 million in the first quarter, as a result of cuts to company promotions, travel and entertainment. Over a year’s time, that equals more than $1 billion.

The revelation illustrates the issues many companies are facing. Even if they prefer in-office work, many companies are saving millions — or even billions — of dollars as a result of remote work.

Apple has reported its quarterly results, delivering an astounding 54% year-over-year revenue growth.

The March quarter is not traditionally one of Apple’s strongest. This year, however, the company had a number of factors in its favor. The iPhone 12, with 5G support, was expected to cause a “super cycle” upgrade as individuals traded in older phones for the revolutionary new feature the 12 offered. Similarly, Apple’s move to its own custom silicon for its Mac line of computers have led to renewed demand.

The company also benefited from the transition to remote work, as Macs, iPhones and iPads saw increased demand among remote employees and students.

These factors resulted in a quarter that exceeded analysts expectations across the board, and accounted for revenue of $89.6 billion. The iPhone accounted for $47.9 billion, a 66% increase. The Mac saw a 70% increase, coming in at $9.1 billion. The iPad accounted for $7.8 billion, or a 35% increase.

“This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days ahead for all of us,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Apple is in a period of sweeping innovation across our product lineup, and we’re keeping focus on how we can help our teams and the communities where we work emerge from this pandemic into a better world. That certainly begins with products like the all-new iMac and iPad Pro, but it extends to efforts like the 8 gigawatts of new clean energy we’ll help bring onto the grid and our $430 billion investment in the United States over the next 5 years.”

“We are proud of our March quarter performance, which included revenue records in each of our geographic segments and strong double-digit growth in each of our product categories, driving our installed base of active devices to an all-time high,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “These results allowed us to generate operating cash flow of $24 billion and return nearly $23 billion to shareholders during the quarter. We are confident in our future and continue to make significant investments to support our long-term plans and enrich our customers’ lives.”

Alphabet released its latest results, reporting a strong quarter on rebounding ad revenue for Google.

Like many companies that rely on advertising, Alphabet was initially impacted by the pandemic. A year in, however, the company’s ad business has recovered and is continuing to grow.

According to the results, Google’s sales came in just under $45 billion, a 32% increase over the previous year. Alphabet’s overall revenue, including Google ad sales, cloud business and device sales, increased 34% from the previous year.

“Over the last year, people have turned to Google Search and many online services to stay informed, connected and entertained,” said CEO Sundar Pichai. “We’ve continued our focus on delivering trusted services to help people around the world. Our Cloud services are helping businesses, big and small, accelerate their digital transformations.”

“Total revenues of $55.3 billion in the first quarter reflect elevated consumer activity online and broad based growth in advertiser revenue,” said CFO Ruth Porat. “We’re very pleased with the ongoing momentum in Google.”

Telehealth and telemedicine are growing in popularity as a result of the pandemic. As regions were in quarantine and lockdown, many turned to telehealth for their healthcare. Many viewed telehealth as a safer alternative than in-person doctor’s visits for non-critical medical needs.

Unfortunately, successful deployment and use of telehealth programs requires quality internet access, specifically internet that allows videoconferencing. To help address this, T-Mobile has partnered with Zyter, a leading provider of software as a service (SaaS) digital health products.

Ford has taken a major step toward moving its electric vehicle (EV) battery production in-house, with the announcement of Ford Ion Park.

Ford Ion Park is the company’s facility dedicated to pioneering various methods of battery production. The project will bring together a cross-functional team of 150 experts to help address the entire scope of battery production, from mining to development to manufacturing to recycling.

Like most manufacturers, Ford is leaning heavily into hybrid and EV development, and taking a more hands-on approach to its battery development will give it a competitive advantage over some of its rivals.

“We’re already scaling production of all-electric vehicles around the world as more customers experience and crave the fun-to-drive benefits of electric vehicles with zero emissions,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product platform and operations officer. “Investing in more battery R&D ultimately will help us speed the process to deliver more, even better, lower cost EVs for customers over time.”

“We are creating new tools and solutions we need for a carbon-free, affordable and better future,” Thai-Tang added. “We are modernizing Ford’s battery development and manufacturing capabilities so we can better control costs and production variables in-house and scale production around the world with speed and quality.”

The 200,000 square-foot lab is in Southeast Michigan, with the team already underway. An additional $185 million collaborative learning lab will also be build in the area, “dedicated to developing, testing and building vehicle battery cells and cell arrays opens late next year.”

The Federal Communications Commission has granted SpaceX permission to launch satellites at a lower altitude.

SpaceX has been deploying its Starlink satellite constellation with the goal of providing high-speed internet access to underserved communities around the world. The company has received extra impetus as a result of the pandemic, as many individuals in remote areas have struggled with reliable broadband.

The majority of the Starlink constellation operates in the 1,100 – 1,300 km range, but SpaceX is wanting to launch 2,814 satellites at a much lower range — 540 – 570 km. The FCC has agreed to the request.

Specifically, we modify the license by reducing the number of satellites from 4,409 to 4,408; modifying the primary operational altitude specified for 2,814 satellites, to change it from the 1,100-1,300 km range to the 540-570 km range

Deploying satellites in lower orbit will help improve the speed and latency of the internet access, as it shortens the distance data must travel to and from the satellite to Earth-bound base stations.

As part of the agreement, SpaceX had to agree to accept interference from Amazon’s Kuiper satellite constellation, which already had permission to operate in the lower altitude.

SpaceX has since agreed to accept interference from the Kuiper system as well with respect to its Ka-band uplinks, where operating SpaceX’s satellites at lower altitudes will potentially make SpaceX more susceptible to interference.

On the heals of its announcement about podcast subscriptions, Spotify is notifying some users they will have to pay more.

Spotify has Apple squarely in its sights with its announcement it would offer podcast subscriptions to compete with Apple’s Podcast announcements at its Spring Loaded event. Unlike Apple’s subscription service, Spotify will not take a cut from the subscription fee, giving the entire amount to the podcaster.

Unfortunately, it appears Spotify will be raising prices, according to The Verge. In the US, Spotify Family will increase from $14.99 to $15.99 a month, while Duo, Premium and Student plans will remain the same price.

In the UK, however, the price hike is more dramatic. Spotify Student will go from £4.99 to £5.99 a month, while Duo will go from £12.99 to £13.99. Spotify Family will go from £14.99 to £16.99 a month.

“We offer a variety of subscription plans tailored to our users’ needs, and we occasionally update our prices to reflect local macroeconomic factors and meet market demands while offering an unparalleled service,” a Spotify spokesperson told The Verge.

Lyft has announced Toyota subsidiary Woven Planet is acquiring its self-driving division, Level 5.

Autonomous driving is widely considered to be the next major evolution of the auto industry. Unfortunately, autonomous driving has been a difficult technology to crack for companies of all sizes. Tesla recently was called out by Consumer Reports for self-driving tech that’s easily fooled.

Meanwhile, Level 5 was launched in 2017, with the goal being to have a majority of rides happen in self-driving vehicles by 2021. Instead, Lyft is now selling off its self-driving division after failing to meet those goals. Woven Planet, Toyota’s autonomous driving division, is buying Level 5 for $550 million.

“Today’s announcement launches Lyft into the next phase of an incredible journey to bring our mission to life,” Lyft Co-Founder and CEO Logan Green said. “Lyft has spent nine years building a transportation network that is uniquely capable of scaling AVs. This partnership between Woven Planet and Lyft represents a major step forward for autonomous vehicle technology.”

AWS and Google Win Israeli Government Contract for Cloud Services

The Israeli government has chosen AWS and Google Cloud to provide cloud services for the government and defense systems.

The Nimbus Project is the government’s initiative to construct a cloud infrastructure and migrate its operations to the cloud. According to The Jerusalem Post, AWS and Google won the bid over several of their biggest rivals.

The two IT giants will set up cloud-based data centers, as the first step in a plan to move much of the government’s IT infrastructure to the cloud, at an initial investment of NIS 4 billion. They beat out bids on the project from Microsoft, Oracle and IBM.

The contract is a big win for the first and third largest cloud providers. AWS, in particular, has a long history of providing cloud services for the US government. This was no doubt a factor, as the company is accustomed to working within governmental security concerns.

The Post’s source also believe AWS may have been chosen for the additional benefits it can bring to the Israeli economy, since opening a cloud region in Israel would open the door to significant investments and job opportunities.

Roku has accused Google of “predatory, anti-competitive and discriminatory” actions regarding its YouTube TV streaming service.

Roku is the number one streaming platform in the US, making it a major factor in the success of TV streaming services. Meanwhile, Google’s YouTube TV has quickly become one of the most popular cable TV alternatives.

According to Deadline, however, Roku is warning its customers they may not be able to access YouTube TV in the near future. While many disputes in the industry are often the result of money, Roku says Google is not asking for “a single additional dollar in value” in the current negotiations.

Instead, Roku says Google is “attempting to use its YouTube monopoly position to force Roku into accepting predatory, anti-competitive and discriminatory terms that will directly harm Roku and our users.” In particular, Deadline reports Roku is accusing Google of trying to “manipulate the user experience to siphon data and tilt search results in YouTube’s favor,” with the company more interested in customer data than charging Roku more.

In addition, Google may require Roku to upgrade its devices with more powerful chips to accommodate YouTube TV, something that would be a costly endeavor.

It is not clear when the issue will come to a head and potentially disrupt service, although the end of April is a strong possibility, as it coincides with many media contract deadlines.

Apple has been rumored to be working on mixed reality glasses for some time. Unlike a strict virtual reality environment, mixed reality combines virtual reality or augmented reality with a person’s surroundings — hence the “mixed reality” moniker. CEO Tim Cook has made no secret of his belief that augmented and mixed reality offer a more social and productive experience than straight virtual reality, one that keeps people connected to the world and people around them.

Ming-Chi Kuo is one of the most respected Apple analysts, with a solid track record predicting the company’s next moves. According to a note seen by MacRumors, Kuo is expecting the mixed reality glasses in 2022.

Apple is certainly not the first company to tackle augmented reality glasses. Google famously introduced one of the first, and most high-profile, entrants in the market — Google Glass.

One of Apple’s greatest strengths, however, is taking a concept someone else has pioneered and refining it in a way that leads to mass adoption. The iPad is a perfect example, a far more refined and consumer-friendly tablet than Microsoft’s much earlier Tablet PC.

Carbon removal is one of the more promising ways of fighting climate change. Pulling carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and oceans, and then trapping it in rock or other materials, promises to be one of the most attainable methods of slowing climate change and reversing the warming of the planet.

To aid in that goal, Elon Musk is putting up $100 million as incentive to inventors, according to Reuters.

“I don’t think we are currently doomed…if we keep going, complacent, there is some risk of non linear climate change,” said Musk, when introducing the $100 million in prizes.

The incentives will last for four years, through Earth Day 2025.

Spotify is ramping up its competition with Apple, with plans to introduce podcast subscriptions with no cut taken from the podcaster.

Apple announced some major changes to Podcasts at its Spring Loaded event. One of the biggest was paid subscriptions that would give individuals the ability to unlock ad-free listening, gain early access to new episodes and support their favorite podcasts.

Podcasters pay $19.99 a year to enable subscriptions, followed by 30% of any subscription revenue to Apple for the first year. The cut drops to 15% after the first year.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Spotify is preparing to unveil its own subscriptions — with one major difference: no cut taken from the content creator. Instead, 100% of the earnings will go to the creator.

Spotify has been working hard, and spending big, to dominate the podcasting space. If the WSJ’s sources are correct, the company may have a major competitive advantage versus Apple.

This can pose a problem for videoconferencing, gaming, content uploads and more.

Comcast is on the verge of revolutionizing internet speeds, delivering upwards of 4Gbps in a lab test.

In the test environment, the research team demonstrated the ability of the SOC to deliver upstream and downstream throughputs of greater than 4 gigabits per second (Gbps). Future optimization is expected to drive even greater capacity.

For the time being, Comcast customers will still be limited to 3 – 35Mbps uploads. Comcast’s test, however, shows just what’s possible in the (hopefully) near future.

Consumer Reports (CR) has tested Tesla’s Autopilot software and it’s not good news for the electric vehicle company.

In the wake of the fatal crash in Spring, Texas, in which it was reported that no one was behind the wheel, CR wanted to see if that scenario was possible. Tesla’s Autopilot software is only supposed to work in certain conditions, conditions which include a driver in the driver’s seat.

Unfortunately, Jake Fisher, CR’s senior director of auto testing, was able to easily and repeatedly bypass Tesla’s safeguards. In multiple tests, Fisher engaged Autopilot, put a weighted chain on the steering wheel to simulate the weight of a hand, slid over into the passenger seat, and then accelerated the stopped Tesla using the steering wheel dial.

“The car drove up and down the half-mile lane of our track, repeatedly, never noting that no one was in the driver’s seat, never noting that there was no one touching the steering wheel, never noting there was no weight on the seat,” Fisher says. “It was a bit frightening when we realized how easy it was to defeat the safeguards, which we proved were clearly insufficient.”

Fisher’s overall evaluation of Tesla’s Autopilot was equally damning, especially compared to what’s available from its competitors.

“In our evaluation, the system not only failed to make sure the driver was paying attention, but it also couldn’t tell if there was a driver there at all,” says Jake Fisher, CR’s senior director of auto testing, who conducted the experiment. “Tesla is falling behind other automakers like GM and Ford that, on models with advanced driver assist systems, use technology to make sure the driver is looking at the road.”

Stone’s comments illustrate the challenging tightrope social media platforms are walking right now, as they struggle to uphold freedom of speech, while cracking down on posts and comments that incite violence.

Verizon reported its first-quarter results, citing a strong start to the year despite reporting 178,000 phone net losses.

Verizon’s latest quarterly reports are a mixed bag, simultaneously beating expectations and losing 178,000 subscribers.

The company reported $5.4 billion net income for the quarter, an increase of 25.4%. Similarly, the earnings per share came in at $1.27, up from the $1.00 they were a year ago.

Total wireless revenue came in at $16.7 billion, a 2.4% increase year over year. In spite of that, Verizon experienced 170,000 retail postpaid net losses, including 178,000 phone net losses, compared to 68,000 net phone loses a year ago.

“Verizon is off to an excellent start in 2021 as we met the challenge of intense competition in the first quarter by achieving revenue growth across our three business segments,” said Verizon Chairman and CEO Hans Vestberg. “This year began with a transformative milestone for our company with our success in the recent C-Band spectrum auction. We continue to strengthen our networks, execute on our Network-as-a-Service strategy and focus on the five vectors that underpin our growth framework and position us to deliver success in 2021 and beyond.”

Jaguar Land Rover is halting production at two of its UK factories as a result of the global semiconductor shortage.

The pandemic has helped fuel an unprecedented demand for semiconductors. As individuals were under lockdown and quarantine, tablets and computers surged in popularity, thanks to remote work, gaming and entertainment. In combination with supply chains already strained by the pandemic, these factors have helped create a massive shortage.

The semiconductor shortage has already created problems for Ford and GM, but it appears the Jaguar Land Rover is the latest automaker to halt production as a result. The automaker will be halting production at two of its UK facilities as a result.

“Like other automotive manufacturers, we are currently experiencing some COVID-19 supply chain disruption, including the global availability of semiconductors,” the company said in a statement, according to U.S. News & World Report. The shortage “is having an impact on our production schedules and our ability to meet global demand for some of our vehicles.”

AT&T reported its first-quarter results, scoring big on wireless subscriber growth and HBO Max subscriptions.

The wireless company reported revenue of $43.9 billion for the quarter, up to 2.7%. Even more significantly, AT&T added 595,000 postpaid subscribers, the most valuable customers for a wireless carrier. The company also added an additional 207,000 prepaid subscribers.

HBO was another bright spot for the company, adding 2.7 million HBO Max and HBO subscriptions.

“We continued to excel in growing customer relationships in our market focus areas of mobility, fiber and HBO Max,” said John Stankey, AT&T CEO. “We had another strong quarter of postpaid phone net adds, higher gross adds, lower churn and good growth in Mobility EBITDA. We also continue to increase penetration in markets where we offer fiber broadband and we’re moving quickly to deploy more fiber. HBO Max continued to deliver strong subscriber and revenue growth in advance of our international and AVOD launches planned for June.”

AT&T’s report is in direct contrast to Verizon, who reported a loss of 178,000 postpaid connections during the same period.

Dish Network and AWS have announced a partnership, the first of its kind in the telecom industry, with Dish using AWS for its 5G deployment.

Dish Network is working to roll out its 5G network. The company is trying to diversify from its traditional satellite TV service, and become the fourth nationwide wireless carrier. Dish received a major boost thanks to the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, with the terms of the agreement requiring T-Mobile to sell off some of its wireless assets to Dish.

As part of its rollout, Dish is building its network around Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN). O-RAN is a specification that allows a carrier to use equipment from multiple vendors, rather than being locked in to a single one.

Dish has chosen AWS as its cloud provider, and will build its 5G network on AWS.

“Through this collaboration with AWS, we will operate not just as a communications services provider, but as a digital services provider harnessing the combined power of 5G connectivity and the cloud. Together, we will enable our customers to take full advantage of the potential of 5G. A proposed piece of legislation would tackle surveillance and the warrantless purchase of individual location data.

The “Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act” is a bill that has wide bipartisan support and would address some of the biggest challenges in the realm of surveillance. Clearview AI made headlines in early 2020 as it built a business model on scraping images from social media networks and using them to build an AI-powered facial recognition database.

Clearview AI sold access to its database to law enforcement agencies all over the country, transactions that were performed without a warrant. Other companies have been accused of doing the same thing, selling location data to law enforcement agencies without due process or authorized warrants.

The Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act would address that loophole, ensuring courts have a say in the process.

“Doing business online doesn’t amount to giving the government permission to track your every movement or rifle through the most personal details of your life,” Senator Ron Wyden said. “There’s no reason information scavenged by data brokers should be treated differently than the same data held by your phone company or email provider. This bill closes that legal loophole and ensures that the government can’t use its credit card to end-run the Fourth Amendment.”

“The Fourth Amendment’s protection against unreasonable search and seizure ensures that the liberty of every American cannot be violated on the whims, or financial transactions, of every government officer,” Senator Rand Paul said. “This critical legislation will put an end to the government’s practice of buying its way around the Bill of Rights by purchasing the personal and location data of everyday Americans. Apple has answered a big question about the upcoming Center Stage iPad Pro feature, stating it will work with third-party video apps.

One of the most frustrating things about videoconferencing on an iPad is the placement of the camera. Because the camera is placed at the top of the screen when held in portrait mode, it is off to the side when in landscape mode, such as when it’s in a keyboard case. As a result, looking at the screen during a video conference makes it appear as if the person is looking off to the side — because they are, in relation to the camera.

When Apple unveiled the new iPad Pro at its Spring Loaded event, one of the most promising features was one called Center Stage. Using the iPad’s Ultra Wide camera, in combination with machine learning, Center Stage keeps the user centered in the screen, appearing to look directly at the camera.

One of the biggest questions was whether the new feature would only work with FaceTime, or if it would support third-party apps, such as Zoom, Skype or Teams. Apple has clarified on its iPad Pro page that the feature will work with third-party apps.

The all‑new Center Stage uses the Ultra Wide camera and machine learning to change the way you participate in video calls. As you move around, it automatically pans to keep you centered in the frame. When others join in or leave the call, the view expands or zooms in. Center Stage works with FaceTime and other video conferencing apps for an even more engaging experience

The news will remove a significant irritation for anyone primarily using an iPad Pro for their work and virtual meetings.

A new study has shown that smartphones can be used to create an earthquake early warning system, providing an inexpensive option for many countries.

Early warnings can mean the difference between life and death when an earthquake strikes. Many wealthier nations have invested in expensive early warning system. For many developing countries, however, such systems are out of reach.

Ben Brooks, of the U.S. Geological Survey, presented the results of a study before the Seismological Society of America (SSA)’s 2021 Annual Meeting. According to the study, a network of 80 cellphones were used to detect earthquakes, and the results compared against a scientific-grade system.

According to ScienceDaily, the ASTUTI (Alerta Sismica Temprana Utilizando Teléfonos Inteligentes) network detected and alerted on 5 of 13 noticeable earthquakes in Costa Rica. The smartphones were attached to baseboards, with their accelerometers detecting the earthquake-induced shaking.

“The performance level over the six months is encouraging,” Brooks said. “Cascadia events in the Pacific Northwest are similar to the Costa Rican subduction zone, and latencies for ShakeAlert in Cascadia are about 10 seconds, so it’s comparable.”

Brooks believes ASTUTI could be valuable to countries across the wealth spectrum.

“I would imagine that would be attractive for countries with less resources to dedicate to earthquake early warning” Brooks said, “but the performance is also at a level that I imagine would interest even wealthier countries.”

The entire report is well-worth a read, and demonstrates another innovative way smartphones can be put to use.

Huawei is facing accusations that it had the access and ability to monitor all the calls made on KPN’s wireless network, one of the largest in the Netherlands.

Huawei has been facing accusations for years that it serves as a conduit for Beijing to spy on governments and companies around the world. The US ultimately banned the Chinese firm from participating in its networks, and many of its allies did the same.

Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant saw a confidential report prepared for KPN in 2010 by the Capgemini consultancy firm. According to The Guardian, the report found that Huawei and China could have monitored calls by then prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende, as well as Chinese dissidents.

KPN has downplayed the report, saying it “never observed that Huawei took client information.” At the same time, it did acknowledge that one of its suppliers had “unauthorised, uncontrolled or unlimited access to our networks and systems”.

The report was originally commissioned after the Dutch intelligence service warned of potential espionage. Despite the findings, KPN continued to use Huawei for its 3G and 4G deployments, although it excluded the company from its 5G network.

The report concluded that the findings put “the continued existence of KPN Mobile in serious danger” since customers “may lose confidence … if it becomes known the Chinese government can monitor KPN mobile numbers.”

It remains to be seen what fallout KPN may still face now that the report has become public.

The Daily Mail has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google, claiming the search giant wields too much advertising power and newspapers see little in return.

As Google has grown from a search engine to an advertising behemoth, it has exerted an increasing level of control over the entire advertising process. The company now controls the ad exchange, ad space on publishers pages and the inventory of available ads.

According to Reuters, The Daily Mail has had enough and is suing Google.

“The lack of competition for publishers’ inventory depresses prices and reduces the amount and quality of news available to readers, but Google ends up ahead because it controls a growing share of the ad space that remains,” the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit adds to a growing list of suits Google is facing, including one by the Department of Justice, as well as one by a coalition of states.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has sent a stark warning for companies to ensure their AI algorithms are unbiased…or else.

AI is being adopted across a wide spectrum of industries. Unfortunately, studies repeatedly demonstrate the propensity for AI algorithms to be biased. In many cases, this is the result of the datasets used to train AIs not reflecting the necessary diversity.

In a blog post, the FTC addresses this issue:

Watch out for discriminatory outcomes. Every year, the FTC holds PrivacyCon, a showcase for cutting-edge developments in privacy, data security, and artificial intelligence. During PrivacyCon 2020, researchers presented work showing that algorithms developed for benign purposes like healthcare resource allocation and advertising actually resulted in racial bias. How can you reduce the risk of your company becoming the example of a business whose well-intentioned algorithm perpetuates racial inequity? It’s essential to test your algorithm – both before you use it and periodically after that – to make sure that it doesn’t discriminate on the basis of race, gender, or other protected class.

The FTC also warns companies to be careful not to overpromise what their AI can do, such as advertising a product that delivers “100% unbiased hiring decisions,” yet was created with data that wasn’t truly diverse. The FTC advises companies to be transparent, use independent standards and be truthful about how they will use customer data.

The FTC warns that companies failing to follow its advice will deal with the consequences:

Hold yourself accountable – or be ready for the FTC to do it for you. As we’ve noted, it’s important to hold yourself accountable for your algorithm’s performance. Our recommendations for transparency and independence can help you do just that. But keep in mind that if you don’t hold yourself accountable, the FTC may do it for you. For example, if your algorithm results in credit discrimination against a protected class, you could find yourself facing a complaint alleging violations of the FTC Act and ECOA. Whether caused by a biased algorithm or by human misconduct of the more prosaic variety, the FTC takes allegations of credit discrimination very seriously, as its recent action against Bronx Honda demonstrates.

Discord has ended talks with Microsoft — over the latter attempting to buy the chat platform — and will focus on going public instead, according to reports.

Discord got its start as a place for gamers to chat and communicate. The platform is especially popular as gamers play competitively, or in games that require coordinating large numbers of participants. In the wake of the pandemic, however, Discord has been rebranding itself as a general purpose chat app, as opposed to strictly one for gaming.

The company was in discussions with Microsoft for the Redmond-based company to purchase it. The combination seemed like a good fit for both parties, especially with Microsoft’s Xbox platform and gaming focus.

The talks have ended, however, with Discord rejecting a $12 billion bid from Microsoft. According to Bloomberg, the company will now focus on going public.

Representatives of both companies declined to provide Bloombergwith a statement.

Cook highlighted the revolutionary impact of the transition to Apple’s custom M1 silicon, before giving the stage to John Ternus to discuss the latest addition to the M1 family: the iMac.

The new iMac is a throwback to the original iMac, coming in seven different colors. Unlike previous generations, however, the M1 allows the iMac to achieve an all new degree of thinness. In fact, the new model is only 11.5 millimeters thick.

iMac stays under 10 decimals under most situations, barely audible to the human ear.

Navpreet Koloty showed off the progress Apple has made on the iMac’s cameras, the best the company has ever put in a Mac. Cameras were always a weak point for the Mac, something that became more apparent during the pandemic, as people started relying on videoconferencing.

The iMac’s speakers and microphones also received a major upgrade, resulting in the best sound system ever put in a Mac.

The new machines are up to 85% faster than previous models, with up to 2x faster GPU performance and up to 50% faster than the fastest discrete graphics iMacs. Machine learning is up to 3x faster.

The iMac is the first desktop to offer Touch ID. Touch ID can be used to log in, make purchases and activate fast user switching, to switch between user accounts.

Raja Bose took the stage to announce the iPad Pro now has the M1 chip as well. The M1 in the iPad Pro delivers 50% faster performance than the previous generation. The 8-core GPU delivers up to 40% faster GPU performance than the previous model.

The new model includes support for the latest Playstation and Xbox controls, complete with haptic feedback.

The new iPad Pro has 2x faster storage access, and is now available with up to 2TB storage. New model includes Thunderbolt support with USB 4.

The new iPad Pro supports 5G, including mmWave in the US, giving it the ability to have 4Gbps download under ideal conditions.

Fiona O’Leary showed the improvements Apple has made to the cameras. One of the biggest announcements was the introduction of Center Stage. Using the new 122-degree, Ultra-Wide camera and machine learning, Center Stage keeps the user in the center of the view, addressing one of the biggest complaints of the iPad’s current cameras.

The new models also include the much anticipated mini-LED display, complete Liquid Retina XDR, a first for the tablet line. The Magic Keyboard is also available in white.

The 11-inch model starts at $799, while the 12.9-inch starts at $1,099.
