SolarWinds Hackers Gained Access to Microsoft Source Code

Microsoft has revealed that hackers viewed some of its source code as part of the SolarWinds attack that government agencies are still investigating.

The SolarWinds attack is one of the most devastating cyberattacks perpetrated against US companies and government agencies. Believed to be the work of Russian hackers, the attack was a supply chain attack, compromising SolarWind’s Orion IT monitoring and management software.

As one of the organizations impacted, Microsoft has now revealed the hackers viewed some of its source code, but did not make any modifications.

We detected unusual activity with a small number of internal accounts and upon review, we discovered one account had been used to view source code in a number of source code repositories. The account did not have permissions to modify any code or engineering systems and our investigation further confirmed no changes were made. These accounts were investigated and remediated.

Microsoft is not concerned about the source code being viewed, since the company’s security protocols assume its source is being viewed by outside elements.

At Microsoft, we have an inner source approach – the use of open source software development best practices and an open source-like culture – to making source code viewable within Microsoft. This means we do not rely on the secrecy of source code for the security of products, and our threat models assume that attackers have knowledge of source code. So viewing source code isn’t tied to elevation of risk.

As with many companies, we plan our security with an “assume breach” philosophy and layer in defense-in-depth protections and controls to stop attackers sooner when they do gain access.

Although Microsoft seems to be containing any damage adequately, the degree to which the attackers compromised one of the biggest tech companies in the world is further evidence just how successful the SolarWinds attack was.

Facebook’s growth may have slowed in recent years, but the pandemic is driving it to new heights in Latin America.

As Facebook has achieved market saturation in many parts of the world, its growth has naturally slowed. As Business Insider points out, however, the pandemic has been a significant growth factor for Facebook, especially in Latin America.

“In Latin America specifically, we now expect the number of Facebook users to grow by 8.8% in 2020 to 339.5 million, up from 7.3% in 2019 and more than triple the growth we originally expected for this year (2.8%),” writes BI’s Daniel Carnahan. “And for the first time, Facebook’s penetration in Latin America will reach over half of the population, at 53%.”

It remains to be seen if Facebook can sustain its growth rate, and seems likely it will not once things return to normal. Nonetheless, its growth rate in Latin America is good news at a time when the company is under siege from multiple angles.

T-Mobile Data Breach Exposes 200,000 Customers’ Data

T-Mobile has suffered a major data breach, impacting some 200,000 customers.

Wireless carriers are prime cybersecurity targets, thanks to the wealth of customer data they have access to. According to T-Mobile’s disclosure, its cybersecurity team discovered unauthorized, malicious access to some of that customer information.

Fortunately, “the data accessed did not include names on the account, physical or email addresses, financial data, credit card information, social security numbers, tax ID, passwords, or PINs.” The hackers may have accessed “phone number, number of lines subscribed to on your account and, in some cases, call-related information collected as part of the normal operation of your wireless service.”

The company is working with law enforcement agencies and has begun notifying those customers affected.

This is the third major breach T-Mobile has suffered, and the second of 2020. Especially with T-Mobile’s newfound status as the second-largest carrier, it will need to do more to keep its customers’ data safe.

Amazon’s Head Alexa Scientist: ‘The Turing Test Is Obsolete’

Amazon’s head scientist of Alexa is arguing that the Turing Test is obsolete as an AI test and should be replaced.

Alan Turing published his famous paper 70 years ago, wherein he outlined the Turing Test as a way to evaluate artificial intelligence to see if it had achieved true intelligence. Since then, it has been the gold standard researchers have used in their efforts to advance AI.

Writing in Fast Company, Rohit Prasad says the Turing Test is now obsolete.

The Turing Test is fraught with limitations, some of which Turing himself debated in his seminal paper. With AI now ubiquitously integrated into our phones, cars, and homes, it’s become increasingly obvious that people care much more that their interactions with machines be useful, seamless and transparent—and that the concept of machines being indistinguishable from a human is out of touch. Therefore, it is time to retire the lore that has served as an inspiration for seven decades, and set a new challenge that inspires researchers and practitioners equally.

Prasad makes the case that the work of modern AI researchers should focus on making AIs that complement humanity, rather than ones that are indistinguishable from humans.

Instead of obsessing about making AIs indistinguishable from humans, our ambition should be building AIs that augment human intelligence and improve our daily lives in a way that is equitable and inclusive. A worthy underlying goal is for AIs to exhibit human-like attributes of intelligence—including common sense, self-supervision, and language proficiency—and combine machine-like efficiency such as fast searches, memory recall, and accomplishing tasks on your behalf. The end result is learning and completing a variety of tasks and adapting to novel situations, far beyond what a regular person can do.

Prasad’s point of view has a lot of merit, and could fundamentally change many researchers’ approach to the field. Changing expectations could also help address concerns from those who believe AI is the biggest existential threat to humanity. By focusing on complementary AI systems, instead of ones that duplicate human intelligence, some of those concerns may be nullified.

Either way, Prasad’s argument is well-worth a read in its entirety.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has unveiled new rules cracking down on robocalls, requiring phone companies’ assistance.

The FCC has been working to address robocalls, a growing problem for American consumers. Beyond simply being an annoyance, many robocalls are designed to take advantage of the unsuspecting, scamming them out of private information, money or both. Even legitimate, non-commercial, robocalls can be a nuisance when there are no limits on the volume.

“Americans are sick and tired of unwanted and illegal robocalls, and today’s separate actions are like a one-two punch to ward them off,” said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai. “Today, we are putting much needed limitations on robocalls to our homes, and taking additional steps regarding call blocking that will yield significant improvements for consumers.”

The new rules tackle robocalls normally exempted from existing robocall regulation, such as those from tax-exempt organization, political calls and market research. The FCC will now “limit the number of exempted calls to three calls to any residential phone from any caller within any consecutive 30-day period. Previously, there was no limit on the number of non-telemarketing robocalls that any caller could make to a residence. Callers are also now required to allow consumers to opt out of these calls.”

In addition, the FCC will require telcos to do more to crack down on robocalls on their own networks, and cooperate with the FCC and law enforcement efforts to identify the source of robocalls.

The rules will likely be welcomed by consumers who are sick of being harassed.

Security Firm Corellium Wins Copyright Battle Against Apple

A federal judge has sided with Corellium in the case Apple brought against it, ruling the company’s software met the burden of “fair use.”

Corellium was founded in 2017 by husband and wife Amanda Gorton and Chris Wade. The company’s product allows security researchers to run “virtual” iPhones, eliminating the need to buy iPhones in order to look for bugs and security flaws in iOS.

According to The Washington Post, Apple initially tried to purchase Corellium, before switching gears and suing the company when the acquisition talks stalled. Apple claimed the company’s software broke its copyrights and violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by circumventing Apple’s security measures.

While the DMCA claim has not yet been thrown out, Judge Rodney Smith sided with Corellium on the copyright issue, finding the company’s software qualified as fair use. In particular, Judge Smith called Apple out for its “puzzling, if not disingenuous” claims that Corellium posed a risk. Apple has said the company’s products could open the way for attacks on actual iPhones if it fell into the wrong hands, and even went so far as to say that Corellium was selling its software indiscriminately.

Judge Smith found the Corellium had a sufficient vetting process in place to negate those concerns. What’s more, rather than circumventing Apple’s security measures to make a competing product, Corellium’s work benefits all of Apple’s iOS customers.

Apple works hard to cultivate an image of maintaining the moral high ground, often putting morality above basic profit. In this case, however, Apple got it wrong and Judge Smith’s ruling is a clear win for security researchers and Apple’s own customers.

US prosecutors have charged a China-based Zoom executive for shutting down meetings on behalf of Chinese authorities.

Xinjiang Jin, also known as Julien Jin, is accused of fabricating reasons to take action against various accounts, especially those critical of or commemorating the Tiananmen Square massacre, according to The New York Times. Jin is accused of gaining access to meetings and then posting prohibited content, such as child pornography or terrorism-related items, in order to get the meetings flagged and shut down.

“Americans should understand that the Chinese government will not hesitate to exploit companies operating in China to further their international agenda, including repression of free speech,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray in a statement.

Zoom has since fired Jin and has placed other employees on administrative leave while it conducts an internal investigation. The company’s investigation has already shown that Jin accessed and shared user data with Chinese authorities, although Zoom says it was “fewer than 10 individual users” outside of China. This was despite Zoom’s efforts to restrict China-based employees from accessing the company’s global network.

To date, Jin has not been arrested and will likely not be, given that he was aiding Chinese authorities. As the NYT points out, however, this is a significant escalation for US prosecutors, emphasizing the tightrope American tech companies operating in China must walk.

Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store saw massive gains over the Christmas holiday as people stayed at home.

As the coronavirus pandemic has hit record levels, health experts urged people to stay at home and cancel their holiday plans. While some refused to do so, many did change their plans. As a result, people looked elsewhere for entertainment and distraction, specifically to app stores.

According to Sensor Tower’s estimates, people spent a shopping $407.6 million on the App Store and Play Store on Christmas. This represents a 34.5% year-over-year (YoY) growth from 2019.

The biggest category was games, which grew 27% YoY, representing $295.6 million. Aside from games, Entertainment was the biggest category, with $19.3 million being spent on the App Store and $4.3 million on the Play Store.

Sensor Tower’s figures are just the last example of the digital transformation currently underway, accelerated by the global pandemic.

Dan Ives, Wedbush Senior Technology Analyst, is bullish on Microsoft thanks to its “unparalleled” advantages in cloud transition.

Microsoft’s Azure platform is currently in second place in the cloud market, behind AWS. In spite of that, Azure has been growing rapidly, outpacing the market at large. In particular, Microsoft has been making headway at the expense of AWS and third-place rival Google Cloud.

Ives doesn’t see that stopping, thanks to the unique position Microsoft is in, in combination with continued work-from-home trends.

“Deal flow looks strong heading into the rest of FY21 as we estimate that Microsoft is still only ~35% through penetrating its unparalleled installed base on the cloud transition,” Ives said, according to Markets Insider. “To this point, we believe Azure’s cloud momentum is still in its early days of playing out within the company’s massive installed base and the Office 365 transition for both consumer/enterprise is providing growth tailwinds over the next few years.”

As a result of these factors, Ives sees the company’s stock hitting $260 per share next year, an increase of 16% over the current price.

“From a valuation basis, even if we take a 10%+ haircut to the cloud and enterprise growth drivers, we are still looking at what we value as a $1 trillion valuation cloud franchise for Redmond,” he added.

Apple may be preparing to take typing to the next level, with plans to make a keyboard that could adaptively change its keys as needed.

With the rise of mobile computing, tables and smartphones, people are expecting devices to be more versatile. It’s no longer enough to have a computer that sits on a desk at home or at the office. Instead, people rely on their devices for work, communication, entertainment, learning and more.

Apple may be preparing to take that versatility to the next level, working on a keyboard with dynamic key labels, if a newly filed patent is any indication. First noticed by Patently Apple, the patent is entitled “Electronic devices having keys with coherent fiber bundles.”

The patent’s Abstract outlines what Apple may be working on:

An electronic device may have a reconfigurable keyboard. The keyboard may be formed from an array of keys coupled to a housing. Each key may have a movable key member and an associated key display. Control circuitry in the keyboard may direct the key displays to display dynamically adjustable key labels for the keys. Each key movable key member may be formed from a fiber optic plate. The fiber optic plate may be formed from a coherent fiber bundle with opposing first and second surfaces. The first surface may be adjacent to the key display and may receive key label images from the key display. The second surface may face outwardly towards a user and may receive key press input from the fingers of a user while presenting key label images for viewing.

This kind of adaptive, configurable keyboard could be a big help to gamers, multi-language typists, as well as anyone using custom software that has specific keyboard requirements.

Intel has signaled it is willing to work with Third Point hedge fund to improve its business.

As we reported earlier today, Third Point’s CEO sent a letter to Intel’s chairman urging changes as the chipmaker lags behind rivals.

“Without immediate change at Intel, we fear that America’s access to leading-edge semiconductor supply will erode, forcing the U.S. to rely more heavily on a geopolitically unstable East Asia to power everything from PCs to data centers to critical infrastructure and more,” CEO Daniel Loeb wrote.

According to International Business Times, It appears Intel is open to discussion with Third Point in an effort to make changes.

“Intel Corporation welcomes input from all investors regarding enhanced shareholder value,” the California tech giant said. “In that spirit, we look forward to engaging with Third Point LLC on their ideas towards that goal.”

Cisco has reportedly decided to pull the plug on its plans to build a business around smart cities.

Smart cities are considered the future of urban planning, using sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) devices and other electronics to improve the city’s functioning. Everything from utilities to hospitals to policing to medical care to IT services to traffic and transportation can be greatly improved and made more efficient.

Cisco had bet heavily on the technology, centering its efforts around its Cisco Kinetic for Cities software. According to The Wall Street Journal, however, the company is now abandoning its efforts.

“We recently decided to stop sales and eventually support for the Cisco Kinetic for City product line to align our product investment to evolving market needs and customer requirements,” a company spokesman told The Wall Street Journal.

Cisco has been working for some time to transition into software and services, relying less on hardware. Its latest earnings report showed the strategy is beginning to pay off, especially during the pandemic. Nonetheless, it appears the smart city business presented too many challenges for continued investment.

Third Point LLC, an activist hedge fund, is urging Intel to make changes to address its falling status in the chipmaking industry.

Once the undisputed leader in chipmaking, Intel’s processors were used in everything from mobile devices to PCs to servers. Unfortunately for the company, it failed to keep up with changes in the industry, especially with the rise of mobile processing.

Designed by Arm Holdings, ARM chips are known for their outstanding performance to power consumption ratio. ARM-based chips power iPhones, iPads, Android devices and, most recently, computers. In the case of Apple’s Mac platform, the ARM-based M1 offers superior performance to comparable Intel chips while using a fraction of the energy. The result are machines that run cooler and have much longer battery life.

Intel, in contrast, has struggled to offer that winning combination of performance and efficiency. The company struggled to move to 7nm processors, has had issues keeping up with demand and been plagued with “unfixable” security issues. The company has also lost some of its best engineers, including Jim Keller and Murthy Renduchintala.

To make matters worse, AMD has been chipping away at some of Intel’s stronghold markets, especially with its Ryzen line of chips. The Ryzen 3000 took aim at the desktop, the 4000 series made headway in the mobile market and the 5000 is challenging Intel in the gaming market. Meanwhile, the Threadripper Pro is challenging Intel’s server dominance.

Intel’s issues have reached the point where the company is even considering outsourcing its chip production.

Third Point CEO Daniel Loeb wrote to Intel’s chairman, Omar Ishrak, urging the company to take action to address its issues, according to Reuters.

“Without immediate change at Intel, we fear that America’s access to leading-edge semiconductor supply will erode, forcing the U.S. to rely more heavily on a geopolitically unstable East Asia to power everything from PCs to data centers to critical infrastructure and more,” Loeb wrote.

One of the suggested remedies was “separating its chip design from its semiconductor fabrication plant manufacturing operations, according to the sources. This could include a joint venture in manufacturing, according to the sources.”

It’s unclear if Intel will respond, although Third Point’s nearly $1 billion stake in Intel could make it hard to ignore. Either way, one thing is clear: Intel must figure out a way to turn its business around before it’s too late.

Japan is working to address the growing issue of space junk, with plans to launch satellites made of wood.

Space debris is a growing problem, with an estimated 14,000 pieces larger than 4 inches, 200,000 pieces between 0.4 and 4 inches, and possibly millions smaller than 0.4 inches. Unfortunately, the problem is only going to get worse as the commercialization of space continues.

As companies continue to deploy satellite constellations for internet access, engage in commercial flights and more, space junk will continue to add up. Adding to the concern is what happens when old, defunct satellites fall back to earth, potentially releasing harmful elements on reentry, or scattering dangerous debris across the Earth’s surface.

Japanese company Sumitomo Forestry, along with Kyoto University, is working on a solution involving wooden satellites, according to the BBC. The two organizations are experimenting with different types of wood to find one that can withstand the rigors of space. If successful, wooden satellites would eliminate much of the threat by completely burning up in the atmosphere.

“We are very concerned with the fact that all the satellites which re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere burn and create tiny alumina particles which will float in the upper atmosphere for many years,” Takao Doi, a professor at Kyoto University and Japanese astronaut, told the BBC.

“Eventually it will affect the environment of the Earth.”

“The next stage will be developing the engineering model of the satellite, then we will manufacture the flight model,” Professor Doi added.

If Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry are successful, their work could revolutionize the space industry and potentially solve one of its biggest challenges.

With an estimated 72 million subscribers, Apple Music is one of the most popular music streaming services. Apple has been steadily improving its offering, including family sharing options and making it easy for auto manufactures to integrate via CarPlay.

Hacker @greentheonly was poking around the Tesla 2020.48.26 software update and found a reference to Apple Music.

According to the hacker, Tidal integration is probably next, but it appears Tesla has been working on Apple Music integration for some time. Hopeful Tesla owners will soon be able to access the feature.

Volkswagen has provided the first glimpse of a mobile charging robot, designed to provide autonomous vehicle charging.

One of the biggest challenges to the wide-scale adoption of fully electric vehicles is a charging infrastructure. With multiple automakers committed to transitioning to electric vehicles within the next two decades, the race is on to provide the charging infrastructure that will be needed.

“A ubiquitous charging infrastructure is, and remains, a key factor in the success of electric mobility. Our charging robot is just one of several approaches, but is undoubtedly one of the most visionary,” explains Thomas Schmall, CEO of Volkswagen Group Components.

Volkswagen’s mobile charging robot, complete with blinking eyes, is designed to charge vehicles in close-quarters areas where a traditional charging station is not an option. The robots may be used in underground garages, restricted parking areas, or other places where space is at a premium.

Users will be able to use to app or Car-to-X communication to summon the robot for charging. Once summoned, the robot will autonomously take over the entire process, including communicating with the vehicle, opening the charging port, plugging in, charging and disconnecting.

“Setting up an efficient charging infrastructure for the future is a central task that challenges the entire sector,” says Schmall. “We are developing solutions to help avoid costly stand-alone measures. The mobile charging robot and our flexible quick-charging station are just two of these solutions.”

In the latest twist of the never-ending saga, the US government is appealing an injunction against its TikTok ban.

The US government has been working to ban TikTok for some time. The Trump administration has accused TikTok of being a security threat, and made it clear that only a sale to an American company would prevent an outright ban. Oracle, with Walmart joining it, emerged as the winning bidder. Per the terms of the deal, however, Oracle would only gain a 20% stake in the company. Meanwhile, China signaled it would oppose a deal it felt was unfavorable to the country’s image.

Meanwhile, TikTok was left in limbo as it tried to work out a deal with the US government as the deadline approached. The company won an injunction, with at least one judge even questioning if the ban was legally viable.

Not willing to give up the fight, the US government is now appealing the injunction, according to Reuters. The Justice Department is bringing the case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

Given that Judge Carl Nichols — when granting the injunction — said the government had “likely overstepped” in its decision to ban TikTok, this case could redefine the limits of the government’s authority.

Apple is reportedly planning on releasing a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro in early 2021, featuring 5G and a mini-LED display.

Many have been eagerly anticipating a refresh of Apple’s flagship iPad Pro in view of recent developments. The iPad Air was refreshed in September 2020, powered by a new A14 Bionic chip. Similarly, Apple unveiled its new line of Macs in November, powered by its M1 custom silicon. In contrast, the iPad Pro is still powered by the older A12Z Bionic chip.

According to a report by DigiTimes, Apple is preparing the next version of the iPad Pro, one powered by a newer A14x chip. The new iPad Pro will also feature a mini-LED display, a major improvement over existing models. The new display will provide sharper, brighter colors, as well as improved power-efficiency.

The new model will also reportedly be the first iPad with 5G connectivity. Given Apple’s efforts to position the iPad Pro — especially the 12.9-inch model — as a professional work device, including 5G makes a lot of sense.

Apple often releases new iPad models in March, meaning we may have less than three months before the latest version of Apple’s revolutionary platform.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has passed new rules allowing drones to fly at night and fly over people.

Drones represent the single fastest-growing segment in the transportation sector, although the lack of clear regulation has slowed full adoption. The FAA has now addressed two of these issues, passing rules that should pave the way for more widespread drone usage.

The first change is that the FAA will now require Remote Identification (Remote ID) for drones. Remote ID will help integrate drones with the national airspace system by providing a way to identify them and their control station locations.

The second major change is allowing drones to be flown at night, as well as over people. While these kind of operations are currently allowed, they’re only allowed with a waiver from the FAA. With the new rules, drone operations will have increased flexility to perform these kind of operations without a waiver.

“The new rules make way for the further integration of drones into our airspace by addressing safety and security concerns,” said FAA Administrator Steve Dickson. “They get us closer to the day when we will more routinely see drone operations such as the delivery of packages.”

Amazon has reported a record-breaking holiday season, shipping some 1.5 billion products.

Consumer purchasing has underwent major transformation as a result of the pandemic. Record numbers of individuals turned to online shopping to avoid crowds and practice social distancing.

Amazon was one of the biggest beneficiaries of this transformation, as customers turned in droves to the online giant. The company delivered some 1.5 billion electronics, toys, home products, beauty and personal care products during the holidays.

In addition, third-party sellers saw a 50% growth in sales, compared to 2019. Small and medium-sized businesses sold almost 1 billion products via Amazon.

The company’s growth also resulted in hundreds of thousands of new jobs, with the company adding some 400,000 full and part-time jobs in 2020. The company also spent over “$2.5 billion in bonus pay to front-line workers,” as well as donated millions of items during the holiday season.

“Amazonians around the world have truly shown what it means to be customer-centric and support our communities this year,” said Jeff Wilke, CEO Worldwide Consumer at Amazon. “When our customers—including healthcare workers on the front lines—most needed essential supplies, our teams and partners went above and beyond to stock and deliver those items. When it became clear that COVID-19 testing was going to be important, Amazonians across the company moved quickly to build our own testing capacity so we could help protect employees and deliver products to customers. And when customers needed a little extra holiday cheer, millions of employees and partners worked together to deliver more savings and holiday gifts than ever before. As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, senior citizens have borne the brunt of casualties. This is especially true of those living in nursing homes, though the extent varies. As of September 2020, 25% of US coronavirus deaths occurred in nursing homes; however, 4-5 star nursing homes had 94% lower risk than their 1 star peers. When the current pandemic ends, those disparities will remain. As the Baby Boomer generation of America continues to age, nursing homes will house more people than ever in upcoming years.

Despite the upward trajectory of demand, nursing homes remain unpopular among Americans. Only 19% think nursing homes make seniors better off. Seniors don’t move into nursing homes because they want to, but because they can no longer care for themselves and lack the resources to pursue other alternatives. The average nursing home resident needs 4 hours of personalized nursing care every day due to diseases like Alzheimer’s or arthritis. Care that intensive is hard to achieve elsewhere.

Unfortunately, meeting senior’s medical needs currently comes at the cost of social isolation. Moving away from friends and routines causes depression in 40% of seniors, a statistic tied to worse health outcomes in a bitter feedback loop. Even before COVID-19, 55% said they didn’t see enough of their families, a sad reality that generates a sense of loss and abandonment in nursing home residents. 

Nursing homes need to adapt. They must find ways to either increase social outcomes for residents or give seniors the tools they need to live independently. As Rosalie Kane, Ph.D. professor of health policy and management at the University of Minnesota, said, “nursing homes are places to live, in addition to clinical settings… Health care needs might be met at the expense of drastically changing someone’s daily life and routines for the worse. The challenge is to pay attention to quality of life as an outcome in itself, and see how health care may be related to quality of life.”  

Advances in medical technology are improving the quality of nursing home care all around. Some innovations can even help seniors regain independence and return home. Current tech includes Solo-Step, a rehabilitation harness that prevents fall-related injuries and lets users move about more freely, and Aiva voice assistant, which gives seniors an easier way to communicate with other residents, family members, and caregivers from a distance. These devices are available now; the longer they’re on the market, the more chances they’ll have to proliferate. Future technologies include The Kidney Project, an artificial kidney that would remove the need for dialysis in recipients. These products give aging people a chance at a brighter future in spite of the current health crisis.

As Elaine Ryan, Vice President of Government Affairs for State Advocacy at AARP, says, “this pandemic has made us painfully aware that we can’t ignore our most vulnerable people. Americans always respond to a crisis. And there is hope that, with innovative ideas and bold action, they will again.”

According to The Information, Zoom is planning to launch email and calendar services. This would the put the company in direction competition with Microsoft Outlook, as well as Google Workspace.

Zoom is expected to make the email service available to some customers as soon as next year, although there is less information on the calendar service. The company has also been hiring for positions involving integration with third-party services, such as Dropbox and Asana.

Should The Information’s sources be correct, this would represent a significant move for Zoom and would likely be a big win, especially if the company can offer a well-integrated, comprehensive experience.

A coalition of nearly 400 companies has won a Department of Defense (DOD) 5G contract worth some $2.5 billion.

The National Spectrum Consortium includes 384 member companies and academic institutions. The consortium won the Spectrum Forward Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) contract, the purpose of which is “to accelerate the development, adoption and deployment of next-generation technologies” for US soldiers.

“An Other Transaction Agreement is the most effective method to enable rapid prototyping in the US Government,” said Tony Melita, Executive Director of the NSC. “By bringing industry, academia and the government together, the NSC will tackle the toughest spectrum-related technological challenges facing our nation and the world. We are excited and ready to continue the development of innovative dual-use technologies that support our warfighters and American jobs.”

“The United States has been the global leader in mobile technologies for decades,” said Sal D’Itri, Chairman of the NSC. “Now, as 5G takes hold, we need to invest in the development of a new wave of capabilities that will once again redefine the technology landscape. On behalf of the NSC membership, we look forward to working the government, industry and academia to take on this challenge.”

The contract award is the latest indication of the importance of 5G across a wide range of applications and uses.

Verizon and Deloitte are teaming up to advance 5G and mobile edge computing (MEC).

5G is a major upgrade to wireless tech, bringing speeds that are poised to revolutionize industries. One area where 5G stands to make a significant contribution is in the realm of edge computing. Edge computing involves processing data at or near the point of collection, rather than sending it to a faraway data processing center. Google Cloud has announced it has opened three new cloud regions, expanding its worldwide cloud presence.

Google currently stands in third place, behind AWS and Microsoft Azure, in the cloud market. CEO Thomas Kurian has made it his stated goal to lead Google Cloud into at least the number two spot within five years. A big step in that direction is expanding Google’s cloud regions.

“Today, we’re excited to announce the expansion of our global network with new cloud regions in Chile, Germany and Saudi Arabia,” writes Dave Stiver, Senior Product Manager, GeoExpansion. “When launched, each region will have three zones to protect against service disruptions, and include a portfolio of key Google Cloud products, while offering lower latency to nearby users and a more robust global network of regions for multinational enterprises. “

Having local cloud regions enables Google Cloud customers to better serve their own customers’ needs.

GM appears to have a hit on its hands with the Edition 1 of the Hummer EV pickup truck, and may build more to meet demand.

GM acquired the Hummer brand from the original military Humvee maker, AM General. GM proceeded to make civilian models, which came to epitomize the gas-guzzling SUV. When GM went through its financial issues, ultimately resulting in bankruptcy, the Hummer brand was retired by the company.

In January it was announced the Hummer would return, this time as an electric vehicle. The very thing that made it a costly, inefficient traditional SUV — its size — worked in its favor as an EV platform, providing ample room for batteries and electric motors.

The Hummer EV Edition 1 is a limited edition model that was available for preorder in October. According to Detroit Free Press, a dealer who attended a national dealer meeting indicated the Hummer was already wildly popular:

The Hummer Edition 1 sold out in 10 minutes and they said they had enough orders for it to fulfill their first year of production currently. But they are evaluating if they can build more.

GM clearly has a hit on their hands with the new Hummer, and the preorder success will no doubt educate their future plans for the EV.

As FBI investigators continue combing for evidence surrounding the Nashville bombing, 5G paranoia is emerging as a possible motive.

Anthony Quinn Warner has been named a “person of interest” in the Nashville bombing, with investigators trying to learn everything they can about the man. According to News4 Nashville, the local NBC affiliate, the FBI were contacted by Steve Fridrich, a realtor who had previously hired a “Tony Warner” to do some IT work for him.

According to Fridrich, the FBI asked if Warner was paranoid about 5G technology. A source close to the investigation told News4 that 5G paranoia was one of several angles that were being pursued.

If Warner’s motivations were based on 5G paranoia, it wouldn’t be the first time the new technology has sparked extreme responses. 5G towers and base station around the world have been vandalized by those who believe the wireless tech causes cancer or, in the most bizarre theories, is somehow responsible for COVID.

The BBC broke a story that seemingly indicated Cellebrite had broken Signal’s encryption — only it’s not true.

Signal is a popular messaging app, boasting some — if not the best — security and end-to-end encryption of any messaging platform on the planet. It’s so secure that some military units, the US Senate and the EU Commission all recommend their members use it. In addition to politicians and military personnel, Signal is widely used by journalists, activists, political dissidents and others for whom privacy is paramount. The app even has features, such as the ability to blur faces in photos, to help protect that privacy.

Celebrate, in contrast, is an Israeli company that specializes in hacking encrypted devices. The company’s products are used by the FBI, other law enforcement agencies, and have even been purchased by school districts for use on students’ phones.

The BBC reported that Cellebrite claimed to have cracked Signal’s encryption, potentially casting doubt on the platform. In fact, the BBC’s article was entitled: “Signal: Cellebrite claimed to have ‘cracked’ chat app’s encryption.”

Signal has written a blog post to set the record straight, calling the BBC’s headline “factually untrue.” Even the blog post Cellebrite wrote outlining their efforts, a post Signal called “embarrassing” (for Cellebrite), has been significantly altered and shortened, toning down the company’s claims from the original version (accessible via archives here).

So what happened? Did Cellebrite break Signal’s encryption? The short answer is No.

Cellebrite’s entire “success” depended on having physical access to an Android phone that was already unlocked with the screen on. In the realm of computer security, a simple rule is: If someone has physical access to your device, all bets are off. Once physical access is obtained, it’s usually only a matter of time before security measures are compromised to some degree or another.

More to the point, however, Signal, like other similar apps, is designed to protect messages and communication from electronic eavesdropping — not from someone who has unfettered access to the devices the messages reside on. As Signal’s blog points out, it’s a simple matter to open up any app, take screenshots of the contents and thereby “compromise” the data on the device for which someone already has unlocked, unfettered, physical access.

In essence, the Cellebrite Physical Analyzer does just that. It simply automates the process of accessing and recording the contents of apps on an unlocked phone. In the world of programming, this is neither complicated nor difficult.

As a side note, if a person is concerned about that possibility, it’s easy to enable disappearing messages in Signal. This added step ensures there is nothing to recover from a device that has been physically compromised.

As Signal’s rebuttal post point out, the entire episode is an embarrassing situation for Cellebrite, a company that so many law enforcement agencies depend on.

It’s hard to know how a post like that got out the door or why anyone thought revealing such limited abilities was in their interest. Based on the initial reception, Cellebrite must have realized that amateur hour was not a good look, and the post was quickly taken down. They then must have realized that a 404 error isn’t any better, and replaced that again with a vague summary.

It’s also hard to know how such an embarrassing turn of events became anything other than a disaster for Cellebrite, but several news outlets, including the BBC, published articles about Cellebrite’s “success,” despite the existence of clarifying information already available online.

The takeaway is that Cellebrite essentially accomplished nothing with their so-called “success.” They did not break Signal’s encryption and they did not compromise the messaging platform. Cellebrite’s entire “success” was no more of an accomplishment than being handed an unlocked phone, perusing it and taking screenshots of the contents.

John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at internet watchdog Citizen Lab, out of the University of Toronto, agreed with Signal.

The evidence is clear: Signal remains one of — if not THE — most secure messaging platforms on the planet.

Google is under siege as it faces multiple lawsuits from the DOJ and coalitions of states, a situation it may have Oracle to thank for.

Oracle and Google have been locked in a legal battle since the former bought Sun Microsystems and the Java platform. When Google developed its Android mobile operating systems (OS), it intentionally made Android compatible with the Java libraries.

Google made the decision in an effort to jumpstart Android’s popularity by piggybacking on one of the most popular programming languages in history. The thinking was that programmers would welcome using a programming language they were already proficient in, as opposed to developing for the iPhone which required learning Objective-C, a language rarely used outside of Apple’s ecosystem.

At the time, the move was met with enthusiasm, including from Sun Microsystems. CEO Jonathan Schwartz even offered his personal congratulations:

“I just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of others from Sun in offering my heartfelt congratulations to Google on the announcement of their new Java/Linux phone platform, Android. Congratulations!

Once Oracle purchased Sun Microsystems three years later, in 2010, the tune immediately changed. Oracle sued Google for infringing on Java copyrights the company now controlled. The case has continued for the past decade, with both sides chalking up victories, and ultimately leading to arguments before the Supreme Court in October. The ramifications of the case could have far-reaching consequences for the software and tech industry.

It appears, however, that Oracle is simultaneously fighting a completely different battle with Google, helping push regulators toward the current antirust cases.

According to Bloomberg, Oracle sent officials in at least twelve of the states currently suing Google a “black box” presentation that outlined Google’s data privacy practices. Specifically, the presentation showed how Google tracked users’ data, including their location, even when the users’ Android phones were not being used.

Ken Glueck, Oracle’s top Washington lobbyist and the man behind the antitrust campaign against Google, was thrilled with the action the states were taking.

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Glueck told Bloomberg. “As far as I can tell, there are more states suing Google than there are states.”

Obviously, any campaign on Oracle’s part was not the sole motivating factor. Google was already under investigation by some individual states, and the company had been under fire for years over its privacy and monopoly practices. Many believed a major lawsuit was inevitable.

Nonetheless, it’s clear that regulators and investigators had an ally in Oracle, and the company may have provided just the push some of those regulators and investigators needed to move forward.

Elon Musk has revealed that he tried to set up a meeting with Tim Cook to sell Tesla to Apple during the Tesla 3’s “darkest days.”

Apple has been making headlines with its Project Titan, its effort to disrupt the automotive industry. Project Titan has alternately been described as a fully electric automobile, an AI system that Apple’s partners could integrate with new vehicles, or a third-party system that could be added to a wide range of vehicles. The most recent rumors have the Apple Car debuting in 2021, while others say it will be released in 2024.

In a surprising revelation, Musk has indicated Apple may have missed out on a golden opportunity to purchase Tesla when the company was worth a tenth of its current value. Musk made the revelation via Twitter, in response to the most recent rumors about the Apple Car.

Verizon has touted its nationwide 5G network, but recent tests show most customers are better off with the company’s 4G.

Verizon made headlines when it debuted its nationwide 5G network, coinciding with the iPhone 12 launch. Verizon had previously focused almost entirely on its high-band, mmWave 5G network, which the company calls “Ultra Wideband.” While offering the fastest speeds, mmWave is notoriously short-ranged and provides poor building penetration. As a result, it is only suitable for the most densely populated city environments, where repeaters and base stations can be placed every couple of hundred meters.

Verizon was the last of the three US carriers to roll out a nationwide 5G network, using low-band spectrum to provide the long-range coverage needed. The reason Verizon was late to the nationwide 5G party was because its low-band spectrum is tied up by its 4G LTE network. Unfortunately, because 5G has not yet achieved widespread adoption, Verizon cannot simply repurpose the spectrum for 5G.

To solve this issue, the company is using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). In essence, the technology shares the spectrum, switching back and forth between 4G and 5G, depending on what type of device is connected to the tower.

The use of DSS appears to be the problem, however, according PC Magazine’s Sascha Segan:

If you don’t have any dedicated channels, DSS lets you use the odds and ends of your unused 4G channels for 5G. The 4G and 5G phones compete for the same 4G channel. The only difference is that the 5G ones are running the 5G encoding system on that channel. There are non-speed advantages to DSS—or there will be in the future, once carriers go to standalone 5G systems—but right now, you’re just getting slower performance.

In our most recent tests, we found that DSS 5G is seriously holding back both iPhones and Android phones. We compared a OnePlus 8 using DSS 5G with a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE on 4G, and we then ran tests on an iPhone 12 Pro toggling between 5G and 4G at the same locations. In both cases, DSS 5G turned in worse results than 4G LTE.

In fact, the results were so bad that Segan recommends turning off 5G altogether, unless a person lives in an area covered by Verizon’s “Ultra Wideband.”

IAC has announced it will spin Vimeo off as a fully independent, publicly traded company.

Vimeo is a video hosting platform that serves as a major competitor to YouTube, with some 200 million users. Like many streaming platforms, Vimeo has experienced major growth as a result of the pandemic.

IAC is now planning on capitalizing on that success, spinning off Vimeo as an independent company.

“The combination of Vimeo’s remarkable growth, solid leadership position, and enormous market opportunity have made clear its future,” said Joey Levin, CEO, IAC. “It’s time for Vimeo to spread its wings and become a great independent public company.”

The long-rumored Apple Car may debut in 2021, two years before it was expected, according to supply chain reports.

Apple has been rumored to be working on the Apple Car for years, with a number of high-profile executives leading the project, known as Titan, at various points. Most recently, the project was put under the oversight of John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of AI. Throughout Titan’s history, it has been describedalternately as a full-fledged car, an AI system for using with a manufacturing partner or an aftermarket system that can be integrated with a variety of vehicles.

According to Bloomberg, the Apple Car is once again on track to be a full-fledged vehicle, slated for release in 2024. Apple is also reportedly working on a radical new battery technology that could give the company an advantage.

A separate report by Economic Daily News (via MacDailyNews), however, puts the Apple Car’s debut much sooner, as early as September 2021.

The key supply chain in Taiwan confirmed that Apple expects to release the Apple Car in September next year, at least two years earlier than the original plan. Its prototype has been tested on the roads in California, USA.

According to the report, Apple is preparing a major manufacturing initiative.

Futian’s second phase plant in Tongluo is expected to be put into operation next year. The production capacity of electric vehicle power motor components for the first and second phase plants can be increased from the current 400,000 sets per year to 1 million sets in one fell swoop, and the power integration system will increase to more than 400,000 sets.

According to the executives of a major electric vehicle supply chain manufacturer, with the order shipment and assembly completed, dozens of Apple Car’s first prototype cars have been secretly tested on the road in California. 

At this point, given Apple’s long-standing and well-deserved reputation for secrecy, there’s no way to know exactly what Cupertino is up to. Nonetheless, multiple rumors regarding the Apple Car’s development and (perhaps) sooner-than-expected release, could signal a major upheaval in the automotive industry.

Google has purchased Neverware and CloudReady, its platform that converts PCs and Macs into Chromebooks.

Google’s Chromebook is a line of devices that run the Linux-based Chrome OS. While multiple companies build and sell Chromebooks, Neverware’s CloudReady makes it possible to convert most old computers into functional Chromebook devices.

“Based on Google’s Chromium OS, CloudReady provides unparalleled speed, simplicity, and security without hardware limitations, whether your computers are brand new or 10 years old,” according to the company.

Neverware says thousands of companies and schools in 142 countries rely on CloudReady. The company announced it had been acquired by Google via its Twitter account.

Google plans on integrating Neverware’s platform, although Neverware indicated in its FAQ that the Home Edition would remain free.
