Samsung Bans the Use of Generative AI

Samsung is banning staff from using ChatGPT, Bard, and similar products over concerns of leaking trade secrets.

Samsung had a well-publicized issue with ChatGPT when one of its engineers leaked sensitive semiconductor information to the chatbot. According to Bloomberg, the company is not taking any more changes, telling employees they cannot use any such generative AI platforms.

“Interest in generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT has been growing internally and externally,” Samsung told staff in a memo. “While this interest focuses on the usefulness and efficiency of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about security risks presented by generative AI.”

“We ask that you diligently adhere to our security guideline and failure to do so may result in a breach or compromise of company information resulting in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment,” Samsung added.

Samsung’s example is just one of the many challenges that come from a workplace in the process of being upended by AI. Large AI models rely on data input to learn and grow, but that also means they can be a security risk when they are fed data that should remain confidential.

OpenAI has recently introduced measures to address data privacy and plans to unveil a business subscription that will give businesses even more control, including the ability to limit employees from being part of the AI training process.
