It was the job opening that blew up! After posting an open Digital Designer position on our website, job boards, and sharing it on our social media, WebDevStudios (WDS) received over 100 applications for the role. It was a difficult challenge, as so many applicants were talented and impressive, but ultimately, we chose one. Meet Jennifer Cooley, WDS’ new Digital Designer.
“Everyone in the WordPress community knows who WebDevStudios is,” says Jennifer, “When I saw the open position, I had to apply. I remember telling my husband after my first interview that I really wanted the job, and I may have even done a little dance when Lisa offered me the position.”
Jennifer began her career as a graphic designer, leaning toward the digital aspects of such a position, such as landing pages and email marketing. It was when she began working for an agency in Wisconsin that she found herself jumping headfirst into the world of WordPress theme development and web design. However, her discovery of WordPress as a viable and reliable solution happened when she was enrolled in a web design program.
“We were given a real-life client and we had to build them a website,” Jennifer explains, “I remember sitting down with the client and discussing their requirements and thinking to myself, ‘How are they going to manage this site if they don’t understand HTML?'” Up until that point, she had heard of WordPress but had not used it. Her professor recommended she try it, and she was hesitant at first. That quickly changed. “Once I started looking over the documentation and learning how any user, regardless of experience, could update their own site, I was hooked,” she exclaims.
Jennifer has a passion for balancing form and function, a quality that makes her an ideal fit for the team at WDS. She compares the challenge to eating your vegetables first so you can jump into dessert.
“If you’re taking the client and user needs into account, you can build a solid foundation that meets those requirements,” says Jennifer. “Once you have your foundation, it becomes a matter of taking something simple and basic and ideating on it until you’ve turned it into an experience. A beautiful, state-of-the-art website with all the bells and whistles can be fun to play with, but if it doesn’t function in an intuitive way for the user, the project isn’t a success.”
Jennifer has now been with us a few weeks. She reports that her onboarding has been great and that WebDevStudios has exceeded her expectations.
“Everyone at WDS is friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to hop on a call, or a Slack chat and help you through any issue you come across,” says Jennifer. “I’m really enjoying getting to know everyone and diving right into my first design project!” We are, too, Jennifer.
